"Really? Didn't look like a newbie move to me," Tobias teased, giving her a sly glance.
"Is that so? Well, I'll take the compliment," Kaia replied, brushing it off with a cool nonchalance.
Kaia kept her cool so perfectly that Tobias was forced to drop the subject, for now.
"Don't let me keep you," Kaia said dryly, basically telling him to see himself out.
"See you tomorrow," Tobias replied, his eyes lingering for a moment before he left.
As soon as Tobias stepped out, he caught sight of Devin looking all stressed out.
"What's with that look?" Tobias asked, raising an eyebrow.
Devin looked torn, like he'd just been dumped or something, opening his mouth but couldn't get the words out.
Tobias couldn't make heads or tails of it. "Spit it out already."
"Boss, um..." Devin glanced at the closed door, saying, "Dr. Bennett is amazing. If she were looking for a husband, the line of guys would stretch from here to the moon. But… You've got Miss Bennett, haven't you? I mean, she may not be as remarkable as Dr. Bennett, but she's seriously top-tier, too.
"She's not just some chess genius. Her medical skills are off the charts. She can tear up the racetrack and do flower arrangement. She is Mr. Stone's favorite disciple, and her martial art is practically legendary. She's got a ridiculous number of talents.
"And the craziest thing? She keeps it all on the down low, never shows off. That kind of humility is literally one in a million. Boss, please don't get sidetracked because someone else looks interesting."
"So, that's what's been on your mind?" Tobias chuckled, feeling a bit helpless.
"You know what? You've got a point. Once the conference wraps up, you get ten days paid vacation," Tobias added, tossing it out like it was nothing.
"Huh?" Devin was utterly lost, totally baffled at how he'd scored ten paid days off for giving relationship advice.
"Boss, I appreciate the vacation, but what about Miss Bennett?" Devin started, still trying to get his point across.
However, Tobias cut Devin off before he could finish his words.
"What if I told you, Kaia is actually Dr. Bennett?" Tobias said with a sly little grin, letting the bomb drop just like that.
"Wait, what? Hold on?" Devin blurted out, his mind totally scrambling.
Devin, a huge dude, practically six feet four inches tall, froze in place like he'd turned into a statue. He stared at Tobias with his eyes wide as saucers. It took forever before he could even get a word out.
"Boss, you're kidding me, right? That's... That's not even a little bit funny," Devin muttered, almost in disbelief.
Tobias scratched his chin with a half-smirk. "Yeah? Guess you're right. It's not much of a joke."
Then, he strolled off cool as ever.
Devin was left standing there, totally shell-shocked, until Joel walked up and clapped him on the shoulder.
"What's got you frozen like that?" Joel asked with a teasing grin.
Devin snapped out of his trance, turning his head awkwardly like he was on autopilot. "My boss just hit me with the wildest joke ever."
"What joke?" Joel asked, shooting him a look.
"He said... Miss Bennett is actually Dr. Bennett," Devin sputtered, still looking shell-shocked.
Joel glanced at the way Tobias had gone, then at Kaia's closed door. After a brief pause, he shrugged and said, "Dude, quit stressing over other people's drama. Whether it's your boss or Kaia or Dr. Bennett, whatever's going on between them, we're extras in their movie. I'm here to be the muscle, and you're the assistant. Let's stick to our own roles and let them handle their business."
That actually made Devin see things clearly all of a sudden. "You know what, you're absolutely right. I'm just an assistant. It's not my problem what happens between them."
The next morning, Kaia was fast asleep when she got woken up by some noise outside her door.
Through the door, she could pick out Kiera's voice.
"Grandpa, I just wanted to help and keep Dr. Bennett safe! Please, let me stay," Kiera begged, her voice practically cracking.
Kaia figured right away: Kiera must've gotten busted sneaking around.
Kaia stepped out into the hall once she'd washed up.
Victor shot Kiera a look full of disappointment and frustration. "I can't believe you dared to sneak into Dr. Bennett's room last night! That took some nerve. What were you thinking?"
