After leaving Kaia's room last night, Victor couldn't shake the feeling that something was off. With decades of experience under his belt, he could tell that something had definitely gone down. And that person who'd slipped into Kaia's room in a combat suit? Chances were, the person had jumped out the window.
Later, Victor pulled up the security footage again and compared it frame by frame. That's when he realized the intruder wasn't just anyone but Kiera, his granddaughter.
Victor had his team check the other cameras to find any suspicious people, and just now, they'd tracked Kiera down.
"Take her away! Bring her back to Morganburg," Victor barked.
"No! I don't want to return to Morganburg!" Kiera shouted, struggling desperately.
"Grandpa, please! I can't go back! I made a bet with Kaia, and I have to stay!" Kiera cried out.
"Hold on," Victor said, raising his hand. The men holding Kiera stopped in their tracks.
"What did you just say? You made a bet with... with who?" Victor demanded, voice turning cold.
Kiera clenched her jaw, then spilled everything that went down last night to Kieran.
"That's it, Grandpa. I bet with Kaia, and I can't lose. If I do, she'll have me wrapped around her finger, totally calling the shots," Kiera said, voice shaking with panic.
Victor stared slack-jawed at Kiera, giving her a look that said loud and clear: 'Kid, are you brain-dead or what?'
"Grandpa! If you're gonna go after me, I wasn't the only one in Dr. Bennett's room last night. Kaia was there, too! If you're dragging me off, you might as well take her along! Otherwise, it's unfair!" Kiera yelled at the top of her lungs.
Victor let out a heavy sigh, rubbing hard at his temples.
He used to be so proud of having such a gifted granddaughter, but now, the longer he looked at Kiera, the more she seemed like a fool. Kaia had Kiera completely wrapped around her fingers, and Kiera didn't even have a clue.
Just as Victor was still silently cursing his granddaughter, Kaia walked out from the corridor behind him.
"Victor, she's your granddaughter, after all. I trust she wouldn't hurt me. Why not let her stay?" Kaia said.
Upon hearing that, Kiera spun around to face Kaia, her eyes instantly lighting up.
Kiera couldn't hold back her excitement, calling out, "Dr. Bennett!"
'Finally! I actually got to see Dr. Bennett, and she spoke up for me!' Kiera thought, her heart pounding with joy.
Victor watched Kiera staring at Kaia like she was some sort of idol, and felt his temples throb in frustration.
But then he thought, 'Sure. Kiera's talented, but she's too stubborn and needs some thorough refinement. Maybe Kaia's the right person to knock off those rough edges.'
"Well, since Dr. Bennett put in a word for her, I'll let it slide," Victor said with a resigned sigh.
After that, Victor came up to Kaia and murmured so only she could hear, "Kiera can be pretty wild. Dr. Bennett, I'm counting on you to help guide her."
"Hmm," Kaia replied.
Kaia agreed to it mainly because she couldn't forget how Victor and his brothers had risked everything to protect her three years ago. The Yates family had guarded the borders of Wustriland for generations, sacrificing personal safety for the good of everyone. That kind of heroic spirit—putting it all on the line—left an impression on her.
Kiera stepped up to Kaia, placing her right hand over her heart and saying solemnly, "Dr. Bennett, I swear. As long as I'm here, no one's going to hurt you. Not even a single hair!"
"Would you go all out to protect me?" Kaia asked.
"Of course, I would!" Kiera shot back without a second's doubt.
