He'd almost pulled off her mask. A split second more, it would've been gone.
"Mr. Moreno, that's enough," Kaia said coldly, warning him with a steely edge to her voice.
Tobias lifted a brow, his tone cool as he said, "You're mistaken. I just wanted to wipe something off your mask."
Kaia pressed her lips together, not bothering to reply, and turned away to leave.
"Dr. Bennett!" Tobias called after her.
"Stay away from me," Kaia shot back, her voice icy and unyielding.
Then, she quickened her pace, eager to put some distance between them.
As Kaia was walking away, she suddenly heard a heavy "thud" behind her, followed by Tobias's muffled groan.
She stopped dead in her tracks and whipped around, shocked to see Tobias collapsed on the floor.
Tobias was doubled over, clutching his stomach, his forehead veins popping as he struggled with the pain. His whole face was slick with sweat, and his lips were pale.
"What happened?" Kaia hurried over, worried.
Tobias clenched his jaw, barely able to get the words out. "My stomach... It hurts."
"Your stomach hurts? Is it your appendix?" Kaia frowned deeply, concern flashing in her eyes.
"I... I don't know," Tobias forced out between shallow breaths, his voice unsteady.
Upon seeing how rough Tobias looked, Kaia didn't even think twice. She reached out and grabbed his wrist, checking his pulse with practiced precision.
Tobias watched her expertly handle the pulse check and couldn't help but let a sly little smirk creep onto his face.
"So, you do know your way around medicine, Dr. Bennett," he teased, voice ringing out sharp and clear.
For someone who'd been groaning in pain seconds ago, he suddenly sounded perfectly fine—so much energy you'd think he was putting on a show.
'Wait a second, he's faking all of this!' Kaia realized instantly, her mind racing. 'Seriously? He tricked me again?'
Before she could pull away, Tobias was already reaching out. His fingers were quick as lightning, snatching the mask right off her face.
"You..." Kiera started, trembling with frustration.
"Ha! I knew it was you! I just knew it," Tobias crowed, his eyes sparkling with that unmistakable look of victory.
Tobias grinned at Kaia before him, his grip firm as he caught her wrist before she could slip away.
All the events from the past suddenly flooded his mind, and now it all made sense.
Like how Kaia knew the exact date of the new nanomaterial press conference, how she offered them the rights to develop the new nanomaterial, how she was always dining with the senior professors at Dr. Bennett's research institute, and how Joel even joined the Moreno family as a bodyguard to protect her... Every detail lined up perfectly now.
"Why didn't you tell me?" Tobias blurted out, his voice tight with disbelief and a hint of accusation.
Kaia let out a powerless sigh and gave a wry, almost apologetic smile. "Honestly, was there even anything to say?"
"Nothing to say? Are you kidding me? You're Dr. Bennett!" Tobias practically shouted, his eyes wide with shock as if the truth had knocked the wind out of him.
"So what? Maybe to everyone else, I'm the untouchable Dr. Bennett, but I just see myself as an ordinary researcher who loves science, no different from anyone putting in the work every day," Kaia said smoothly, her expression perfectly calm.
Tobias listened to her surprisingly humble words and, for the first time, felt a little embarrassed about himself.
"You know, everyone always says I'm some genius in the business world, a prodigy, the standout of my generation. And I believed I deserved that reputation. But when I look at you... I can't help but feel like I come up short," Tobias confessed, sincerity showing in his voice.
"I don't think so. It's that we have different personalities," Kaia said, shaking her head at Tobias's self-doubt.
"You've got talent and clout, so why hold back or hide? That's not in your nature anyway. Me? I'm not cut out for the spotlight. I'd rather keep my head down and work in peace. There's no point in comparing us," she finished, her voice calm and matter-of-fact.
Kaia's words hit Tobias like a bolt of lightning, clearing his mind instantly. "No wonder you're a top genius in all of Wustriland. A few lines from you and I'm totally floored," he said, genuine admiration shining through.
Then, Tobias gently cupped Kaia's face in his hands, his eyes locked on hers. "Kaia, what am I supposed to do? I'm falling for you harder and harder, and I can't stop myself!"
