Tobias didn't care about her accusations in the slightest. He said, "When I'm with the woman I want, why bother acting like some gentleman? A real man goes after what he wants and says what's on his mind. If not, what's the point of being a man?"
"People say women are impossible to reason with... Honestly, Mr. Moreno, I think you're taking unreasonable to a whole new level. Even playing the rascal, you're not shy about it at all!"
Just as they were going back and forth, a knock sounded at the door.
Joel cleared his throat, saying, "Dr. Bennett, Dr. Lloyd is here."
Kaia's brows knitted together as she heard the news.
Noticing her mood shift, Tobias couldn't help but ask, "What's wrong? Is there something about Augusto?"
"No..." Kaia started, dodging the question.
"Kaia, don't hide things from me. I want the truth this time," Tobias said, gripping her shoulders as he stared right into her eyes.
Kaia wanted to shrug it off, but staring back at Tobias, she couldn't say anything that wasn't real.
"Okay, I'll be honest," Kaia said with a sigh. "Augusto has seen me as his nemesis for ages. After I created that new nanomaterial and secured my spot, I totally crushed him. So, I have a feeling..."
"You think the SR Alliance agents lurking around were actually sent by Augusto?" Tobias jumped in.
"Did you already know?" Kaia asked, her voice laced with surprise.
"Victor told me," Tobias answered, his expression instantly hardening. The moment he realized someone wanted Kaia dead, the whole vibe around him turned ice-cold, like he was ready to tear into anyone who touched her.
"Knock, knock." The door sounded again.
"Uh... Dr. Bennett, if it's not a good time now, I can explain it to Dr. Lloyd for you," Joel called out awkwardly.
Before Joel could finish his words, Kaia yanked the door open and walked right out.
Kaia caught Joel looking her up and down with the weirdest expression as soon as she stepped outside. His eyes totally said, 'Did Mr. Moreno leave you whole?
Kaia just turned away once she picked up Joel's silent accusation. She couldn't even be bothered to deal with him.
"Where's Augusto?" Kaia asked, glancing around.
Joel cleared his throat again, trying to ease the tension.
"He's in the main hall. I'll take you there," Joel offered.
Kaia barely stepped out, and Tobias was already right by her side, walking shoulder to shoulder like he wasn't going to let her out of sight for a second.
She knew what was up. Tobias was straight-up worried Augusto might try something shady.
Thinking about it, Kaia leaned Tobias close, her voice barely a whisper, "Hey, chill a little. If Augusto is behind all this, he's not dumb enough to pull anything sketchy with so many people around."
"You never know," Tobias shot back. "If he can't go public, he'll go sneaky. Some under-the-table moves you can't see coming. And I'm not letting anything happen to you, not in a million years. You're my world, Kaia. I won't risk losing you for anything."
Kaia hesitated mid-step and gave him an exasperated look. "Do you have to say things that are so corny?"
"Alright," Tobias said, all smiles.
Kaia glanced at Tobias's face and rolled her eyes, thinking, 'Honestly, why do I even bother with this guy? Talking sense into him is a total waste.'
Before long, Kaia stepped into the main hall and spotted Augusto chatting with a few others.
The moment Kaia walked in, Augusto's eyes locked onto her.
"Dr. Bennett, long time no see!" Augusto called out.
Augusto flashed a phony smile and reached out, clearly expecting to shake Kaia's hand.
However, before Augusto could even touch Kaia's hand, Tobias smoothly slid in, taking his hand instead, making it crystal clear who's at Kaia's side.
"Dr. Lloyd, I've heard your name more than a few times. It's a pleasure to finally meet you," Tobias said, switching to flawless Kolish with a casual confidence that instantly filled the room.
Normally, Augusto would've considered such a move pretty rude. But Tobias was on a whole different level. Tobias's presence alone made it obvious that he was someone that Augusto didn't want to mess with.
"And may I ask who this gentleman is?" Augusto said, all polite on the surface, but clearly sizing Tobias up underneath.
