Kaia said, "This is Tobias Moreno, CEO of the Moreno Group in Morganburg, and also the business rep sent over by Wustriland for the occasion."
Augusto was caught off guard by Tobias's identity at first, but the commanding aura Tobias gave off convinced him instantly that Tobias was the real deal.
"So you're the wealthiest man in Morganburg? Heard so much about you," Augusto said with a hint of awe.
As Augusto spoke, his eyes darted between Kaia and Tobias. "Sorry to pry, but you two seem awfully close. What's your relationship, if you don't mind me asking?"
"We're business partners," Kaia replied calmly.
Tobias's brows drew together. He understood that Kaia was playing it safe for everyone's sake, but he couldn't help feeling a little hurt.
So he made up his mind to whisk Kaia away tonight and make up for it properly.
"Are you just business partners?" Augusto narrowed his deep blue eyes, giving Kaia a playful, probing look.
Kaia kept her cool, not letting a single emotion slip.
"So you came all this way just to gossip with me? If that's it, I'm afraid I've got more important things to handle." With a confident nod, Kaia turned as if to leave.
Augusto let out a low chuckle, a devil-may-care glint in his eyes. "Sorry, that was a bit nosy of me. I came by to congratulate you. You've created a cutting-edge nanomaterial and taken the crown as the world's top scientist. That's no small feat."
Kaia's gaze deepened, a flicker of self-mockery crossing her mind. She said, "Honestly, I thought you might not be happy about it."
"What? Why would I be upset?" Augusto returned, a playful smile tugging at his lips.
"Come on, you were the number one among scientists before I showed up. Especially after my breakthrough with nanomaterial, that's when I knocked you off the top spot," Kaia replied.
Kaia was obviously probing him, and Augusto caught on immediately.
"Hey, science belongs to everyone—no borders. What you've accomplished is downright game-changing. It's not just for Wustriland but for the whole world," Augusto replied.
"Well said!" Kaia nodded, her voice casual but her gaze meaningful.
She clapped lightly, her tone light as she said, "Guess I was being a bit petty. A while back, I heard someone hired the SR Alliance to take me out. The government folks came asking who I might've pissed off. After thinking it over, you were the first person who came to my mind."
The atmosphere turned deathly silent at that moment.
Both sides shot each other wary looks.
Only Tobias was smiling, watching Kaia stirring up drama while staying cool as ever. 'Kaia, the girl of mine, is dangerously smart and gutsy,' he thought, a hint of pride flashing in his eyes.
Augusto forced himself to stay composed, barely managing to keep his true feelings under wraps.
Augusto burst out laughing, saying, "Dr. Bennett, you sure have a sense of humor. Me? Hire someone to do that? Not in a million years!"
"Right. I dropped the suspicion the moment I said it. A seasoned scientist like you, Dr. Lloyd, would never stoop so low," Kaia replied, her smile polite but her eyes icy cold.
"Trust me, Dr. Bennett," Augusto said, glancing at his watch. "It's getting late, and I've got things to handle, so I'll make my exit."
"Take care," Kaia replied coolly.
Augusto's look turned shadowy and grim after he left with that forced smile.
Soren, his right-hand man, leaned in quietly and asked, "Dr. Lloyd, did Kaia catch on to us? Otherwise, why would Dr. Bennett confront you like that?"
"No way," Augusto muttered, his voice icy. "Our plan is bulletproof, and nobody suspects what we're up to tonight. She's probably fishing. Kaia's sharp, but she doesn't have anything solid yet."
"So, about tonight. Do we still go through with the plan? If anything happens to Dr. Bennett, those guys from Wustriland are gonna come straight for our throats," Soren murmured, unease all over his face.
Augusto nodded grimly. "You're right to worry. As for tonight... Keep eye on her. Play it by ear. Don't get sloppy."
Then, he added in a low voice, "And make sure you've got some men shadowing Moreno Group's CEO, too. Don't let anything slip by."
Soren frowned and asked, "Why should we keep tabs on him, too?"
