Augusto sneered, "Just a gut feeling. I'm convinced there's way more going on between him and Dr. Bennett than she's letting anyone see."
"Understood, Dr. Lloyd. I'll make it happen," Soren answered with a firm nod.
The communication forum on the first day was not that formal and ended before nightfall.
Kaia looked over at Tobias, who wouldn't get off her bed no matter what she said. With his bathrobe hanging open and all those abs on display, even someone as composed as Kaia found her eyes wandering. No matter how hard she tried to look away, she couldn't help herself.
"Seriously, don't you have your own room?" Kaia asked, a hint of exasperation in her voice.
"Of course, I do," Tobias shot back, flashing a shameless grin. "Isn't it right here?"
Kaia stared at him, utterly speechless.
"Suit yourself," Kaia said, rolling her eyes. Then, without warning, she threw open the window and looked set to jump straight out.
"What are you doing?" Tobias blurted out, his voice sharp with concern.
"It's stuffy in here. I'm going out for a walk," Kaia replied, her tone cool and unbothered.
Tobias was at her side in seconds, grabbing Kaia's arm as she was about to make the jump.
"Hey, this is the third floor! Are you crazy? Wait for me. I'll go with you," he said, sounding all protective and serious.
Tobias got why Kaia wanted to take the window route. She had no interest in strolling outside with Dr. Bennett and becoming the center of attention.
Firstly, she didn't want to invite any unnecessary drama. Secondly, she knew the moment she showed her face, folks would crowd around like she was a celebrity.
"I'm not waiting for you. I'm outta here," Kaia snapped, already halfway to the window.
Tobias grabbed her arm, refusing to let go. "If you don't wait for me, I'll jump out, too, bathrobe and all. We'll strut downtown like this."
Kaia glanced at Tobias, taking in his ridiculously flamboyant getup. If he stepped outside dressed like that, she was sure he wouldn't just be out for a walk. He'd be making a whole scene, blowing up the street with that look.
Picturing all those women giving Tobias those hungry, predatory stares made Kaia feel an inexplicable pang of jealousy she was not willing to admit.
"Hurry up," Kaia grumbled, trying to sound annoyed but coming off a little flustered.
Tobias just grinned, unable to hide how much her words amused him.
His grin was so dazzling that Kaia had to squint, silently grumbling, 'Is he trying to show off or blind me?'
It didn't take long for Tobias to get changed.
"Come on, let's go together," he said.
"Mm," Kaia replied.
After slipping quietly out of the hotel together, Kaia and Tobias wandered side by side through the city streets abroad, soaking in the night air and the novelty of being far from home. No rush, no crowds, just the two of them, stealing a little peace for themselves.
"You didn't eat anything tonight, did you? Want me to grab you something?" Tobias said, nodding toward a bakery ahead. "I've been here before. The ingredients are always fresh, and everything's tasty."
Kaia hadn't felt hungry until Tobias mentioned it. Only then did she remember that she never got to eat at the symposium since she'd been wearing a mask the whole time.
"Sure," Kaia replied.
"Wait for me," Tobias said.
"Alright," Jannik said.
"Don't go wandering off," Tobias reminded, a teasing note in his voice.
"Got it," Kaia replied, rolling her eyes.
"If anything happens, come find me inside," Tobias added, sounding a little too protective.
Kaia rolled her eyes and rubbed her forehead. "Do I look like some helpless toddler to you? Let me tell you, I was learning boxing from my master when I was three!"
"Alright, alright, my Kaia is a total badass. I'll drop it," Tobias said, chuckling.
After cashing in on a tease, Tobias couldn't help but steal a few lingering glances at Kaia before reluctantly heading into the bakery.
Once Tobias headed into the bakery, Kaia found herself a nearby bench and sat down to wait for him.
Suddenly, she sensed movement behind her. Her instincts screamed. Those footsteps were closing in, and they were definitely coming for her.
Moreover, the way the stranger moved spoke volumes—the stranger's stance was unshakable, clearly someone with real training.
Kaia quietly curled her hand into a fist, hyper-aware and ready. The instant those footsteps drew a single pace away, she whipped around, fist flashing out in a lightning strike.
