As Kaia's fist was about to clock someone in the face, she caught sight of who it was and managed to pull back with lightning speed.
Kiera swallowed hard, her face completely pale as she stared at the fist frozen inches from her nose.
It was so close. A split second more, her face would've been wrecked.
Still shaken from narrowly dodging disaster, Kiera couldn't help but marvel at Kaia's insane reflexes and the sheer control it took to stop on a dime like that.
Having lightning-fast reflexes was one thing, but pulling meant Kaia's skills weren't just good. They were off-the-charts, mastered to a whole new level.
Clearly, Kaia was in a league of her own. Putting all differences aside, even Kiera had to admit that Kaia was nothing less than a legend.
"What are you doing here?" she called out.
Kaia shot Verena a stern look and added, "Do you have any idea how risky it is to pop up behind someone like that?"
Kiera was internally losing her mind because of that. She couldn't stop mentally roasting Kaia.
'Bullshit! Popping up behind people isn't dangerous at all. It's only a problem if one shows up behind Kaia. That's when it turns into a near-death experience,' Kiera griped on herself.
"I just happened to see you and wanted to say hi. Do you have to act like I'm some kind of assassin or something?" Kiera retorted, dripping with sarcasm.
Kaia raised her brows, realizing that Kiera's sarcastic jab had nailed the truth without even trying.
For one crazy heartbeat, Kaia honestly thought those people lurking in the shadows were coming for her.
"You seriously came all the way over here to say hi to me? Do we even have anything to talk about? What, you got nothing better to do than track me down for a chat?" Kaia retorted, her voice thick with sarcasm.
Kiera folded her arms, practically glowing with smugness.
"Trust me, I wouldn't waste my time on you for no reason," Kiera shot back. "Just thought you should know. Dr. Bennett actually recognizes my talents now, and I'm working for her. So, Kaia, looks like you lost."
Kaia held back a laugh. "Don't be so sure. Word is, Dr. Bennett was pretty fed up with your past antics. If you get a chance, it's only because you came across as all heartfelt and because you're Victor's granddaughter. She tossed you a shot to prove you've changed."
"Wait, how do you even know about that?" Kiera blurted out, wide-eyed in disbelief.
It wasn't exactly some closely guarded secret, but people on the outside rarely caught wind of it.
Kaia just shot her a mysterious smirk and said, "Take a guess."
Kiera could barely stand Kaia's knack for driving people up the wall with that smug vibe. "You... You're a piece of work, but..."
As she spoke, Kiera's eyes flicked over to the bakery entrance, and that self-satisfied smirk crept back onto her face again.
"Kaia, don't start celebrating too soon," Kiera said, a teasing edge in her voice. "Girl to girl, out of the goodness of my heart, let me clue you in on a little secret."
"Really? What secret are we talking about?" Kaia shot back, her curiosity clearly hooked.
Upon seeing Kaia was genuinely interested now, Kiera decided to play coy and keep her dangling a little longer.
"It's something that could literally decide your happily-ever-after. Ask me nicely, maybe I'll tell you," Kiera teased, letting the suspense hang in the air.
Kaia let out a laugh, sauntered back to the bench, leaned back casually, and started scrolling through her phone with zero care in the world.
Seeing Kaia act so unbothered was enough to make Kiera's blood boil.
"Hey! What are you doing? Seriously, the secret is huge for you. If you don't listen, you'll regret it for the rest of your life!" Kiera blurted out.
Kaia looked up, gave Verena an innocent nod, and replied, "Oh."
Then, she immediately dropped her gaze, went back to her phone, acting like Kiera didn't even exist.
Kiera let out a long, dramatic sigh and thumped her chest, as if she could knock some sense—or patience—back into herself.
'Kaia's gonna send me to an early grave,' Kiera griped inwardly, practically seething with frustration.
"Do you not believe what I'm saying?" Kiera burst out.
