Kaia kept her eyes glued to her phone, barely acknowledging Kiera. "Of course, I believe you. If it wasn't something big, you wouldn't go out of your way to tell me."
"If you believe me, why are you acting like you're not even a little anxious?" Kiera practically shouted, her patience running thin.
Faced with Kiera's slightly growling voice, Kaia stayed chill as ever, saying, "Because you're way more worked up than I am. You can't help yourself. You'll end up blurting it out before I even ask."
'Seriously, someone just zap Kaia already! She's driving me insane!' Kiera groaned inside, her patience totally gone.
If it weren't for the time and place, Kiera would've screamed at the top of her lungs.
"Alright, you win! But don't start getting all smug. Let me lay it out for you. Tobias isn't yours anymore. He's moved on to someone else!" Kiera exclaimed, her tone laced with sly triumph.
As soon as she spat out the news, Kiera fixed her gaze on Kaia, itching to witness that perfect moment when Kaia's face shattered—desperation and heartbreak written all over it.
However...
Kaia didn't even bat an eye. "Oh? So, who's the lucky girl he's chasing now?"
'Go ahead, and keep faking it, Kaia. I'll just wait and see how long you can hold this cool,' Kiera spat inwardly, her gaze sharpening with challenge.
"I saw the whole thing today at the Seminar. Tobias was stuck to Dr. Bennett like glue. He wouldn't let her go for a second. Guess what? They disappeared into a room together and didn't come out for what felt like forever. Just the two of them, locked away inside. Come on, guess what they were doing in there?" Kiera gossiped.
Kaia kept a straight face, deadpan as ever. "Probably discussing business."
"Business? Kaia, give me a break! Are you honestly trying to make me die laughing here?" Kiera mocked, her laughter ringing out, practically showing off how delighted she was to deliver such drama.
"Watch out!" Kaia yelled, shoving Kiera out of the way.
"Are you..." Verena began, but before she could finish her words, a man in a mask lunged at her with a knife, missing as she stumbled back.
Then, more masked thugs burst out from hiding, all wearing identical masks.
Kiera scrambled to her feet and hurried over to Kaia's side.
"Are these people here for you?" Kiera gasped, panic flooding her voice.
Kaia started tying her hair back into a ponytail, totally unfazed. "He went after you first, so pretty sure these guys are after you."
"Come on! Why would I have enemies?" Kiera shot back, disbelief written all over her face.
"Why not? With your attitude, so cocky and full of yourself, I bet you've got haters everywhere," Kaia replied, sarcasm dripping.
Kiera snapped and spat a curse under her breath.
"It can't possibly be your enemies, huh?" Kiera shot back, sarcasm heavy in her voice.
Kaia nodded with mock seriousness. "Well, there's a chance. After all, someone as pure and righteous as me is bound to get under the skin of the sewer rats."
Kiera was so exasperated she could practically cough up blood.
"You're the queen of double standards, aren't you?" Kiera snapped.
The leader was on the phone, giving his boss the rundown. "There are two women here. One's Victor's granddaughter, and the other probably is our target."
Upon hearing that, Kiera shot Kaia a cheeky smile. "Looks like they're after you, not me. Well, good luck dealing with that. I'm not sticking around for this mess."
Then, Kiera made a quick exit, eager to ditch the scene.
Kaia hollered after her, "Get outta here! And do me a favor. Give your grandpa a heads-up and tell him to bring the cavalry over to protect me!"
Kiera was pissed and seriously wanted to punch Kaia right then and there.
The thugs hadn't even looked Kiera's way at first, but once Kaia spoke up, their eyes locked on Kiera like she was fresh meat.
"Don't let her get away! Grab both of them!" the leader barked.
Kiera nearly tripped over her feet, spun around, and shot Kaia a glare sharp enough to cut steel.
'Damn, Kaia. You're ruthless!' Kiera gritted her teeth, cursing in her head.
Kaia flashed Kiera a mischievous, almost cheerful smile. "Well, looks like we're stuck together for better or worse today."
