"Like I'd ever die with you!" Kiera shot Kaia a huge eye-roll, her tone dripping with sarcasm.
After giving Kaia a dramatic eye-roll, Kiera turned to the masked ringleader with open disdain.
"I barely know her, and to be honest, we're enemies. Just let me go. I swear my grandfather won't hear a word from me. Besides, there's no way he'd waste his time coming after a total nobody like her," Kiera said confidently.
"Enough talk! Guys, let's move!" the masked leader barked.
Kiera was thrown right into chaos, fists flying everywhere. In her head, she was cursing Kaia hard. 'This is totally her fault!' she raged at herself.
Kiera also kept cursing out the masked freaks, too. 'Are these people insane? Not only do I have nothing to do with Kaia, we're sworn enemies!' she muttered silently.
Rolling her eyes, Kiera thought, 'They say the enemy of one's enemy is one's friend. Technically, that should make us allies now, shouldn't it?'
Meanwhile, inside the bakery, Tobias was finishing up at the register when a bunch of masked thugs burst in.
"That's Dr. Bennett's boyfriend! Grab him!" one of them shouted.
Tobias's expression turned icy as he glanced outside. As he'd expected, chaos had broken out.
He had to push his way through somehow. He needed to reach Kaia, and fast.
The fight inside was every bit as chaotic as the one raging out front.
"Ah!" Kiera got booted across the floor, landing hard. Before she could even catch her breath, a masked thug closed in, knife gleaming wickedly as he aimed straight for her.
Just in time, Kaia moved like lightning, throwing herself in front of Kiera. She locked onto the masked man's wrist with a pro-level joint lock, twisting with all her strength.
The masked man let out a screech, raw and guttural, as his knife tumbled to the ground.
Kaia kicked the knife up, snatched it out of the air, and twirled the knife like a pro. Without missing a beat, she whipped it around and stabbed the masked attacker right back.
"I'll clear a way. Go! Hurry. Get your grandfather to come help!" Kaia yelled.
Kiera blinked in disbelief. "Seriously? You're actually being nice?"
Kaia's brow furrowed. "They're after me, not you. There's no reason for you to risk your life over this."
"Looks like you've got a little conscience in there, after all!" Kiera retorted.
"Go, now!" Kaia shouted, slashing through several attackers and tearing open the crowd. "Run for it!"
Kiera had been locked in, laser-focused, waiting for her shot. She was a prodigy from a military elite family, after all. If she couldn't read the perfect moment to make her move, what kind of genius would she be?
As soon as Kiera broke out, she shot a look back at Kaia, feeling torn. 'Should I call my grandpa for this?' she debated in her head.
Seriously, not a chance. The beef between Kiera and Kaia ran deep, and out of everyone, Kaia was the one who'd ruined Kiera's reputation in ways she could never live down.
'Forget it! I'll figure that out if I even survive this mess. Escaping comes first!' Kiera decided, racing off without looking back.
Kiera took off, darting down the street, when shouts suddenly rang out behind her.
"That woman is on the run!"
"Let her go. We need get Dr. Bennett!"
Kiera froze mid-step, and her brain completely stopped for a few seconds before she whipped around, eyes wide in shock, staring at Kaia like she'd seen a ghost.
'No way. Did I actually hear that? Did he say Dr. Bennett?' Kiera thought, heart pounding in her chest.
'Kaia? Dr. Bennett?' The words spun around in Kiera's mind, her thoughts tumbling over each other.
'Kaia? Dr. Bennett?' It kept echoing in her head, each time with even more disbelief.
Repeating those names, memories from the past slammed into Kiera all at once.
Many things that had puzzled her suddenly became clear.
'So, that's why my grandfathers are all so protective of her, why Kaia was in Dr. Bennett's room last night, and why Tobias is so hung up on Dr. Bennett. Turns out the clown in the circus is me all along,' Kiera realized, the irony hitting her hard.
Thinking back to the bet she'd made with Kaia, Kiera couldn't help but give herself a self-deprecating smile.
