"Boss, she's way too tough! There's no way we're bringing her in without getting roughed up. If this drags on much longer, Victor's crew and Joel's are sure to show up with reinforcements," one of the masked thugs warned.
The leader hesitated for a couple seconds, his gaze sharpening with a dangerous glint.
"As long as she's not dead, that's good enough. Keep her alive. The client has unfinished business with her," he snarled.
"Yeah!" everyone echoed, voices filled with urgency.
Kaia had been holding her own just fine, but now those guys were going all out, no holds barred. Suddenly, she was seriously outnumbered, and even her skills couldn't keep up with so many coming at her at once.
She'd kicked one guy away when a knife came slashing at her from behind. Even with her lightning-fast reflexes, there was barely any time to react.
"Die!" Kiera shouted, flinging herself at the attacker with the knife and slamming him away with all her strength.
"Kiera?" Kaia gaped at her, stunned.
Kaia was sure Kiera had taken off. She never would've guessed Kiera'd double back, especially to throw herself into danger for her sake. Kaia's heart twisted with surprise and something almost like gratitude.
A mix of complicated emotions hit Kiera all at once as her eyes met Kaia's.
"Don't get distracted! Watch your back!" Kiera yelled at Kaia.
Kaia instantly spun and sent her attacker flying with a kick, then she and Kiera stood back-to-back, ready to fend off attackers while striking back in perfect timing.
"Why'd you come back?" Kaia asked.
Kiera set her jaw and said, "I didn't come back for you."
"Oh? Then, what made you turn around?" Kaia pressed.
"I'm from one of the military clans of the War Division in Wustriland. Guardians of the border since my great-granddad's days. It runs in our blood. Turning our backs on Wustriland? That's not what the Yates family does. You're Dr. Bennett, a national treasure for Wustriland. Protecting people like you is my duty…and my honor!" Kiera declared, pride burning in her voice.
Upon hearing Kiera's proud declaration, Kaia smirked, her lips curling up in genuine approval.
"Guess giving you a chance wasn't a mistake after all," Kaia teased.
Kiera bristled at that jab, but honestly, she couldn't come up with a decent comeback.
"Kaia!" Tobias burst out of the bakery, his voice thick with worry.
The moment Kaia heard anxiety and desperation in Tobias's call, her eyes locked onto him right away.
Her eyes turned red with emotion the instant she saw him.
Tobias's usual elegance was nowhere to be seen. Instead, he looked completely beaten up—clothes and hair all disheveled, white shirt smeared with blood.
Kaia didn't even need to guess. She knew Tobias must've torn through the crowd, getting hurt in the process of breaking through siege in the shortest possible time, all because he was worried sick about her.
"Get out now!" Kaia yelled, urgency sharp in her voice as she tried to push Tobias toward safety.
Tobias's expression was icy and proud, his every word ringing out with stubborn resolve. "Seriously? You think I'd ever bail and leave you behind?"
Kaia bit her lip, feeling her chest tighten with every glance at Tobias. The more battered he looked, the more it hurt to see him like that.
"Can you two quit flirting for one second and actually help out? I'm hanging by a thread here!" Kiera complained, right as another thug nailed her and sent her flying with a vicious kick.
"Damn! My chest again? I'm a girl! If anyone else dares to aim for my boobs, may your wife run off and never come back!" Kiera cursed as she scrambled to her feet.
Still muttering curses, Kiera sprang back up, swinging even harder, throwing all caution to the fighting like she was absolutely done caring.
Kaia dove right back into the fight, not missing a beat.
Half a minute later, the leader got word.
"Joel and the others are almost here?" he called out, anxiety sharp in his voice.
'We can't drag this out any longer,' the leader thought, nerves on edge.
Thinking of that, the leader yanked out a pistol, leveled it right at Kaia's arm, and squeezed the trigger.
"Bang!"
"Watch out!" Tobias yelled, voice cutting through the chaos.
Tobias had been keeping an eye on Kaia every moment, so he caught the threat the split second it appeared.
Tobias reached out, shoving Kaia aside in a heartbeat.
"Bang!" With a sickening crack, the bullet drilled straight into Tobias's chest.
"Tobias!" Kaia screamed, her cry tearing through the chaos, pure panic in her voice.
For several brutal seconds, Kaia was paralyzed by shock. Then, she finally snapped out of it and lunged toward Tobias.
