Kaia forced back her tears, her hands trembling as she treated Tobias, urgently calling his name again and again, her voice raw with fear.
"Tobias, I'm right here with you. Come on, open your eyes and look at me. If you don't...if you don't, I'm never talking to you again," Kaia pleaded, her voice trembling.
Her words caught in her throat, and her eyes grew misty, tears threatening to spill over.
"Tobias, wake up...Please, just wake up, I'm begging you...Open your eyes...open your eyes and look at me," Kaia choked out, her voice breaking.
This was only the second time in Kaia's life she'd felt this powerless. The first was when she was just a little girl, and her parents fell seriously ill. She was completely helpless back then, way too young to do anything. If Tobias's grandfather hadn't appeared out of nowhere to save them, her parents probably wouldn't have survived.
Just as Kaia was sinking into endless darkness, Tobias, with his head cradled in her lap, fluttered his eyelashes and slowly opened his eyes.
He found himself staring right into Kaia's flushed, panic-stricken eyes. Tobias managed to pull his lips into a pale, helpless smile.
"K-Kaia...I...seeing you worry so much about me...it actually makes me really happy," Tobias rasped, his voice barely more than a whisper as another weak cough escaped his lips.
When Kaia saw Tobias open his eyes and register the world around him, a wave of relief crashed through her. It was so heavy that she almost sagged with the weight of it. Not wasting a moment, she tore a strip from her clothes and wrapped it fiercely around his blood-soaked wound, hands shaking but refusing to falter.
"Don't say anything. Don't move," Kaia pressed, her voice taut and determined as she worked to staunch the bleeding.
"A...alright," Tobias rasped, his gaze locked onto Kaia. Even through the haze of pain and exhaustion, there was a rare softness in his eyes. It was gentle and clinging, as if she were the only thing anchoring him to consciousness.
Once she'd managed to stop the bleeding, Kaia wasted no time. Her fingers moved fast and sure as she worked Tobias's pressure points, massaging him with focused intensity to try and ease his pain.
But Tobias was far too wounded. He barely lasted a moment before his eyelids drooped, and he lost consciousness again, slipping away right in front of her.
The instant Kaia realized what was happening, her heart seized with dread. She grabbed hold of his hand with her free one and squeezed tight, desperate not to let him go.
"Tobias, don't you dare close your eyes! You have to stay with me! Look at me, please," Kaia begged, her voice shaky and desperate, clutching his hand tighter.
Hearing her plea, Tobias couldn't bear to let her down. He forced his eyes open once more, and though his gaze was clouded with utter exhaustion, it still brimmed with that unmistakable tenderness and warmth he always had just for her.
"My silly Kaia, I'm only tired, that's all. Are you really not going to let me rest even now?" Tobias teased gently, a faint smile tugging at his lips despite how weak he sounded.
The softer Tobias was with her, the deeper Kaia's guilt burned inside. It felt like every gentle word was a knife twisting in her heart.
Tobias was lying here, all torn up and bleeding, because he stepped in to protect her. Kaia could never forgive herself for that.
Kaia bit down hard on the rising sting of tears, shaking her head furiously as she willed herself not to break down now.
"No! I won't let you close your eyes. Not now! You're not allowed to die, you hear me? You have to fight. Promise me!" Kaia choked out, her voice raw and wild with panic.
"Alright, I'll do everything you say. I'll listen, I swear," Tobias said softly, his fingertips tracing gently over Kaia's hand. "If I died, you'd have to marry someone else, right? How could I possibly bear to let go when you still belong with me?"
"Do you see the mess we're in right now? How can you still be thinking about things like that?" Kaia said, her voice strained but still full of worry.
"You...you're the woman I'm going to marry, Kaia. All I want is for you to smile every day. I never want you to be sad. Even if it's because of me," Tobias whispered.
Tobias's eyes shone with a devotion Kaia couldn't ignore. For a moment, she was completely drawn into that gaze. It was like nothing else existed, and she couldn't tear herself away.
Just as they were lost in each other's eyes, Kiera's breathless and desperate voice suddenly dragged them straight back to reality.
"Kaia, get him out of here now! I can't hold them off much longer!" Kiera shouted, her voice ragged with exhaustion.
