Kaia turned around and saw that Kiera was drenched in sweat. She looked like she had just been pulled out of a pool. It was obvious Kiera was at her limit.
"Hang in there a little longer. I'm getting him out of here," Kaia said.
With that, Kaia quickly helped Tobias up from the ground and supported him as they headed toward the corner.
Tobias was so weak. He desperately needed medical attention. There was no time to lose. They couldn't afford to wait any longer. They had to get out of there right now.
"Okay, hurry up," Kiera urged.
Kiera felt each swing of her blade, and every step was a battle, but the spirit to persevere that's been ingrained in her very being made her grit her teeth and push on, even when her body was at its absolute limit.
Kaia didn't waste another second. She supported Tobias's frail body and hurried away as fast as she could.
Kaia and Tobias had barely taken a few steps when the masked leader's piercing glare caught them.
"Like hell I'm going to just let you walk away!" the lead masked man spat.
His voice was ice-cold. Kaia glanced over and saw the masked leader, gun at the ready, storming toward her and Tobias with a squad of henchmen right behind him.
Kaia's gaze hardened. Afraid the masked leader would go after Tobias again, she quickly moved to shield him and yelled, "Kiera, get over here!"
"On my way!" Kiera shouted back.
Cutting down two more goons, Kiera dashed to Kaia's side at lightning speed.
"What's going on?" Kiera asked.
Kaia said calmly, "I know you're at your limit. Take Tobias and get him out of here. I'll hold them off."
Kiera's eyes widened a little as she glanced between Kaia and Tobias.
"But...my job is to protect you. What if something happens to you while I'm taking him away?" Kiera protested.
Kaia lowered her gaze to Tobias, his face ghostly pale, and in that fleeting moment, something soft and gentle flashed in her eyes. It was an emotion she rarely let anyone see.
"He's the person who matters most to me. If you keep him safe, that's the same as looking out for me. And let's be real. I'm a better fighter than you are. I'll hold them off until Joel and your grandpa get here," Kaia insisted, her tone unyieldingly calm yet revealing just how much she cared.
Kiera was struggling internally. Even though every bone in her body screamed to say no, she had to admit Kaia was right. Right now, this was the only way forward.
Gritting her teeth, Kiera took Tobias from Kaia.
"Alright, but you better hang in there. Don't you dare get yourself killed, or my grandpa will skin me alive," Kiera said.
"Got it," Kaia replied, giving Tobias one last, lingering look before reaching out to pat Kiera on the shoulder.
"I'm counting on you to keep him safe," Kaia said warmly.
Kiera looked at Kaia's hand resting on her shoulder. Her feelings were a complicated mess at the moment.
"Don't worry. I promise, I won't let you down," Kiera said, her voice unwavering.
Kaia gave Kiera a quick shove as she urged, "Hurry!"
"On it!" Kiera replied, firm and resolute. She hauled Tobias away from the corner, moving as fast as she could.
One of the masked guys caught sight of it and quickly asked the leader, "Boss, Moreno Group's CEO and Paxton Yate's granddaughter just got away. Should we send some guys after them?"
"I've already planned for that. Right now, our only job is to catch Dr. Bennett," the leader replied.
The henchman nodded. "Got it, boss."
The masked leader cast an icy, calculating look across the road, a sinister glint flickering in his eyes.
"Hurry up! Paxton and Joel are almost here," he barked, urgency sharp in his tone.
"On it!" the henchman answered.
Without hesitation, the henchman jumped straight into the action, joining the wave of masked goons tightening their encirclement around Kaia.
Surrounded by a swarm of enemies, Kaia fought on as if exhaustion was nothing but a myth. Her blade sliced through the air so fast, it looked like ghostly afterimages trailing her every move.
The masked men couldn't break through her defense. Forced to attack from the outer edge, all they could do was lash out helplessly, kept at bay by her relentless speed.
Kaia used her skill to shove a wave of attackers back, finally getting a split second to catch her breath. But suddenly, her left flank exploded with movement. She saw a shadow lunging straight at her.
"Hang in there a little longer. I'm getting him out of here," Kaia said.
