Her eyes flashed with a fierce, razor-sharp glint. Kaia twisted aside in a heartbeat, dodging the attack, then snapped her leg up and hammered her foot into the guy's chin with brutal force.
A sickening crack sounded as the sound of bone breaking filled the air.
The guy was sent flying, crashing to the ground and howling in agony.
Kaia gave him a cold look and was just about to look away when another shadow lunged at her from the right.
The blade caught the light in her eyes, and her gaze went ice-cold.
She clenched her fist, dodged the blade, then drove her fist straight into the guy's face.
"Aaaah!" The guy howled in pain.
Kaia figured the guy was down for good, but just as she started to turn away, he sprang to his feet, grabbed his fallen blade, and slashed straight for her shoulder in a vicious burst.
She felt the sudden rush of wind and reacted on instinct, trying to dodge.
But with her body completely spent, she just couldn't pull off a move that intense.
The blade barely missed her shoulder and caught her arm, leaving an unavoidable, burning gash.
Instantly, a wave of blood spilled out, painting her skin red. Rage pulsed in Kaia's eyes.
"You've got a death wish!" Kaia snarled.
She shifted into a quick side kick, sending her blade flying through the air like a lightning bolt.
The guy who stabbed her took the blow. His eyes rolled back and he blacked out instantly, collapsing without another sound.
The henchman standing beside the masked leader was starting to get really anxious.
"She's a real handful, boss. If we don't pick up the pace, Joel and Paxton are going to show up with reinforcements and rescue her. We'll have some serious explaining to do to our employer," he warned.
"You think I don't know that? The catch is, our client wants her alive..." The masked leader paused, then his lips curled into a wicked grin as a sinister idea flashed through his mind.
"Ha, I've got an idea. Just shoot her in the leg. We'll cripple her. Let's see how long she thinks she can keep fighting," the masked leader sneered.
With that, he raised his gun, aiming it straight at Kaia's lower leg.
Kaia caught a flicker of movement out of the corner of her eye. The masked leader had leveled the cold, dark muzzle of his gun right at her.
Her heart lurched as she tried to dodge. But the masked men boxed her in, sticking so close there was no way she could dodge.
Kaia was hit by a surge of powerless anger as frustration burned in her chest.
'No! I still need to get back to Tobias. I can't let these guys drag me away!' she vowed to herself, heart pounding with defiance.
Kaia frantically searched her mind for any possible way out.
But the masked leader already had his sights set on her lower leg. Barely a breath passed before he squeezed the trigger, and the bullet shot out like lightning.
Kaia saw it coming, but trapped in the middle of the fight, there was no way she could dodge. All she could do was watch, powerless, as the bullet raced straight for her leg.
But right when danger was about to hit, someone crashed into Kaia, knocking her out of the line of fire.
There was a 'whoosh' sound as the bullet flew past her, barely missing her leg as it slammed into the wall behind her.
And then, armed reinforcements poured in, surrounding Kaia and putting her right at the center of their defense.
The masked leader freaked out when he saw that Kaia narrowly dodged the bullet.
But he realized her backup had arrived. The special forces were here for Kaia, and any advantage his crew had was gone. Sticking around now was a lost cause.
He stared hard at Kaia for several seconds, then with obvious reluctance waved his hand and barked, "Retreat!"
"I'd like to see where you lowlifes think you can escape to!" Paxton's cold voice rang out, cutting through the chaos.
In an instant, the masked thugs were hemmed in by a squad of elite soldiers clad in camo.
They were taken down and restrained in the blink of an eye.
Joel rushed ahead, his eyes rimmed with desperate worry as he saw the wounds and blood all over Kaia. His fists were clenched so hard they almost shook from the tension, and he looked like he was about to burst from anxiety.
"Are you okay? How do you feel right now? I'm getting you to a hospital right away," Joel blurted, his concern barely concealed as he tried to steady himself.
