Kaia gave a small, genuine smile and met Kiera's eyes, expressing her heartfelt thanks.
"Thank you," Kaia said.
Kaia truly meant it.
Kiera's cheeks tinged pink as she awkwardly cleared her throat and turned away, unable to hide her embarrassment.
"I wasn't asking you to thank me," Kiera huffed, shooting Kaia a glare. "Listen, I'm not doing this for you, Kaia. I'm only helping out because you're Dr. Bennett. And let's get one thing straight: Tobias went missing on my turf. Those people didn't just snatch him; they made off with my self-respect, too. If I hadn't been so drained before, they never would've pulled it off! Still, the bottom line is that I screwed up. So it's on me to get Tobias back."
Kaia gave Kiera a long, meaningful look, then stood up and gave her shoulder a reassuring pat.
Kiera stiffened for a moment at Kaia's touch.
"Uhm, what are you doing?" Kiera blurted out, flustered.
Kaia enunciated each word clearly. "I acknowledge you now."
Kiera's mind flashed back to the bet she'd made with Kaia.
She froze for a second, then suddenly snapped out of it and bristled, spinning around to swat Kaia's hand off her shoulder.
"You...you...you knew I was clueless and totally played me!" Kiera stammered, her voice rising in indignation.
As Kiera spoke, she rolled her eyes hard, grumbling to herself.
'She really has the nerve to say she acknowledges me? Yeah, right. Like that's ever happening.' Kiera fumed inwardly.
The whole bet between Kaia and Kiera back then was about who would win Dr. Bennett's approval first. Whoever did would be the winner.
'But you turned out to be Dr. Bennett yourself! What the hell was the point of that bet?' Kiera huffed to herself.
From beginning to end, she'd been totally played and wrapped around Kaia's finger. It was a massive joke.
Kiera grew more and more annoyed the longer she dwelled on it, giving a sharp snort through her nose.
"Alright, I'm done talking to you. Just trust me. I'll bring Tobias back safe, you have my word!" Kiera shot back.
With that, she spun around and stormed out of the living room.
Joel watched Kiera stomp off, a knowing smile playing at the corners of his mouth.
"Kiera might act like a ticking time bomb, but honestly, she's got a solid heart," Joel said.
Kaia nodded in agreement. "She really does. Give her the right guidance, and mark my words, she'll be someone big someday."
Joel shot her a surprised look.
"Didn't expect you to think so highly of her," he said.
"High? Seriously?" Kaia gave a little shrug. "I'm just calling it like I see it."

As Kiera stepped out of the living room, she noticed Paxton waiting just a short distance away.
"Grandpa, what brings you here?" she called out, a mix of surprise and concern in her voice.
She threw a quick glance back toward the living room, a hint of suspicion creeping into her gaze as she turned to her grandfather.
"Wait, Grandpa, were you secretly listening in on us the whole time?" Kiera teased, raising an eyebrow.
Paxton shot her an exasperated look. "Listening in? Is that how you talk to your elders? You guys were talking so loudly I didn't need to eavesdrop even if I wanted to!"
"I don't think I was that loud," Kiera grumbled.
Paxton overheard her mumbling but didn't bother answering. What really caught his attention wasn't how loudly she was talking, but how much her attitude toward Kaia had changed.
"Seems like you've finally made peace with Dr. Bennett," he commented, giving her a look that said he approved.
Honestly, seeing his granddaughter wise up like this made him pretty proud.
Kiera's expression flickered with unease. "Kaia is Dr. Bennett. I can't keep clinging to all that old stuff. That'd just make me look petty."
Paxton stared straight into her eyes, his wise gaze looked right through her.
"So, are you honestly telling me you only let it go because she's Dr. Bennett? There's no other reason?" Paxton asked, not letting up.
That question struck a nerve for Kiera. It was exactly what she'd been asking herself, too.
