"Alright," Kaia replied. "I'll get some snacks ready to go with it."
Joel came back quickly, finding the whole table covered with a generous spread of appetizers and drinking snacks.
Some Kaia had made herself, while others were still in their takeout containers.
He set the wine down next to the food, grinning at Kaia. "What's with all this food? Are we having company over or something?"
"No, it's just the two of us," Kaia said, sitting down across from him.
"We barely ever drink together, so tonight let's do it right and go all in," she added.
With that, Kaia popped open the bottle, poured generous drinks for both her and Joel, and they raised their glasses together.
"Tonight, we're drinking till we can't stand! Cheers! Let's go wild!" Kaia grinned.
Joel hardly ever drank, mostly because he was always looking out for Kaia.
But with Paxton and all the elite guys from the Yates family around, there's just no way Kaia would get into trouble tonight.
Plus, Kaia had been a mess ever since Tobias got snatched. She had barely been eating and had been feeling rough for days. If she wanted to blow off some steam, Joel was more than willing to join her and drink his fill.
He figured that after a good drink and a decent night's sleep, a lot of those gloomy feelings would fade away.
With that thought, Joel lifted his glass and gave Kaia's a firm, enthusiastic clink.
"Cheers!" Joel said, grinning as he raised his glass.
They went back and forth until the bottles on the table were almost emptied from the multiple refills.
When Joel polished off the last drop of wine from the cellar, he collapsed facefirst onto the table, eyes dazed and unfocused.
Joel let out a burp, totally out of it.
Kaia sat across from him, looking completely unfazed. Her cheeks were just a little flushed, but her eyes were bright and steady without a trace of drunkenness.
"Ugh...I'm at my limit. Gotta sleep for a bit," Joel mumbled, his head drooping as he shut his eyes and knocked out instantly.
Kaia watched him for a moment, then got to her feet and waved her hand back and forth in front of Joel's face.
"Joel? Joel..." she called out softly, trying to get any reaction out of him.
She called his name a few more times, but there was no response, not even a twitch. Joel was properly passed out.
Kaia lingered there for several seconds, making absolutely sure Joel was deep asleep. Once certain he wasn't going to wake up, she darted to the window, vaulted over, and shimmied down the wall to reach the ground.
To avoid being spotted by Paxton's men, she slipped out the hotel's back door, quiet as a shadow.
But as soon as she'd made it down the block, the faint crunch of footsteps echoed behind her.
'Crap, somebody's tailing me?' Kaia thought, adrenaline spiking.
She slowed, her eyes narrowing with cold determination, then deliberately kept moving. Her pace was cautious, and every one of her senses was on high alert.
The footsteps stuck to her heels, never letting up. It was like a shadow she just couldn't shake.
Kaia's brows furrowed tight as she spotted a dark alley ahead. In a split second, she darted in, blending herself perfectly into the shadows. From behind the edge of the wall, she quietly stuck her head out, keenly watching her pursuer.
Moments later, someone stepped into the alley, scanning the area for any sign of movement.
"Wait, where did she go? She was literally right here a second ago! Did she just vanish or something?" The person sounded genuinely baffled.
Kiera looked left, then right, frowning as she saw no trace of Kaia anywhere.
Kiera was sure that something wasn't adding up. With instincts as sharp as hers, there was no way Kaia should've slipped away that easily.
But facts were facts. Kaia was gone before Kiera could even realize what was happening.
The way Kaia dodged being followed was freaky-level insane, and borderline impressive to Kiera.
Just as that thought crossed Kiera's mind, a voice whispered suddenly, almost right in her ear.
"Kiera, why are you tailing me?" Kaia's voice cut through the shadows, cold and direct.
