Kiera was startled when Kaia suddenly appeared. She quickly recovered, hands on her hips, and shot back, "Following you? What are you talking about? Do you own this road or something? You can walk here, but I can't?"
Kaia didn't say a word. She just gave Kiera a long, deep look before turning and walking off in the other direction.
Kiera hurried after her, sticking to her like a shadow.
Hearing the footsteps behind her, Kaia let out a helpless sigh. She stopped and turned to face Kiera.
"Stop right there. Where I'm heading isn't somewhere you should be tagging along. Don't follow me anymore, hurry up and go home," Kaia said.
Kiera jutted her chin out, still stubborn as ever.
"Who says I'm following you? This is the only way I have to go. What makes you think you can stop me?" Kiera shot back.
If it were any other time, Kaia would have called Kiera's bluff and even teased her for it. But right now, all Kaia cared about was finding Tobias as quickly as possible. She had zero interest in wasting time on Kiera.
Kaia shot her a glare. "If you keep tailing me, don't blame me if I knock you out."
Kiera spotted the urgency in Kaia's eyes, hesitated for a second, then threw caution to the wind and blurted out her suspicion.
"I'm not stupid, Kaia. You got Joel wasted on purpose so you could sneak off to meet Tobias alone. Just spit it out. Did the guys who took Tobias message you? They want you to come alone, right?" she said, not bothering to hide her doubts.
'Damn, it's always your rivals who know you inside out,' Kaia frowned as she mused.
She and Kiera weren't exactly enemies now, but it was all-out warfare back then. Even though they'd made peace, Kiera still treated Kaia as her main competitor.
When Kaia said nothing, Kiera figured that was as good as admitting it.
She looked at Kaia, sounding a little disappointed, like she wished Kaia could just do better.
"I know you're desperate to get to Tobias. You probably wish that you could sprout wings and just fly to him. But you're basically a legend among Wustriland's scientists. If something happens to you, what's everyone else supposed to do? Now that I'm in the loop, there's no way I'm letting you head out solo! And don't even think about knocking me out. I came ready this time. If you try anything, I'll run for it. There's no way I can take you in a fight, but good luck catching me," Kiera declared.
Kaia rubbed her temples, exasperated. "Just be straight with me. What are you after?"
Kiera paused for a few seconds to prepare herself before she looked up at Kaia with determination.
"I want you to take me with you," Kiera said, her voice firm.
Kaia didn't even hesitate. "No way. The deal states that I have to go alone."
"Forget it," Kiera insisted, stretching her arms out to block Kaia's way. "If you don't let me come with you, then there's no way I'm letting you head off by yourself."
Seeing how relentless Kiera was, Kaia just let out a helpless sigh and gave a reluctant nod.
"Fine, you can come, but when we're close to the spot, you need to hide," Kaia said.
Kiera nodded vigorously. "I know. Don't worry, I'd never gamble with Tobias's safety. Besides, making sure he's safe is going to be part of my job someday."
