As soon as Kaia finished speaking, a slow, deliberate applause echoed through the air.
Clap, clap, clap.
Kaia glanced over and saw a masked man stepping out of the villa.
She narrowed her eyes, sizing him up coolly, and said, "Augusto, why the secrecy after going through all that trouble of inviting me here?"
The masked man paused for a moment, then threw his head back and burst into laughter.
Then, he lifted his hand and slowly removed the mask from his face.
As Kaia had rightfully predicted, Augusto was the one underneath the mask.
"Impressive as always. Those sharp eyes of yours really see through everything," Augusto said.
"Save the flattery. I didn't come here to waste time," Kaia responded, getting right to business.
"Where is Tobias?" she demanded.
Augusto kept on smiling. "Don't be so hasty, Kaia. You and I are both titans in the scientific community. Shouldn't we at least have a little chat?"
"A little chat?" Kaia arched a brow, her tone dry. "I don't recall us ever being that chummy."
Augusto didn't even flinch, his smile never wavering.
"I've always considered you a friend, Kaia. And now you say we're not close? Isn't that a bit harsh on our friendship?" he said, pretending to be hurt.
Kaia scoffed. "A friend? Really? Guess I'm just naive, because I've never seen anyone treat a 'friend' the way you do."
For a split second, Augusto's smile slipped as his attempt at small talk was shot down on the spot.
"Wow, Kaia, I guess you're more than just a high-flyer at the lab. I didn't know you could dish it out like this, too," Augusto joked, trying to keep his cool.
Realizing he might just get roasted into silence if he kept talking, Augusto let the facade drop and, with a flourish, motioned for her to step inside.
"I'm sure you're eager to see Mr. Moreno. Please, after you," Augusto said, a sly edge in his tone.
Kaia gave him a cool once-over, then walked right past him and into the villa.
Augusto watched her retreating figure, a cold, sinister glint flickering in his eyes.
"Close the door," he ordered.
With a slow, creaking sound, the door began to close.
It shut behind her, cutting off the outside world completely.

In the alley, Kiera finally came to her senses, rubbing her sore neck and sucking in a sharp breath.
As the memories of Kaia leaving her in the dust started trickling back, Kiera started cursing under her breath.
"Damn you, Kaia, always catching me off guard. I've fallen for your tricks way too many times already. I'm really sick of your schemes. Just wait, sooner or later, I'm gonna settle the score," Kiera muttered angrily.
Even though she was fuming, Kiera knew that right now, Kaia's safety was the top priority.
It was hard to predict what those people might do to Kaia, now that they've asked her to come alone. Kiera had to get back to Joel and Paxton as soon as possible and let them know what was going on.
A few minutes later, Kiera rushed into the hotel.
She saw Joel passed out, face planted on the table, dead drunk. Heart pounding, she darted over and grabbed his shoulder, shaking him hard.
"Joel! Joel, wake up! Come on, wake up already!" Kiera pleaded, her voice nearly frantic.
No matter how many times she called, Joel just lay there, totally unresponsive.
Kiera bit her lip, her eyes darting nervously around.
Then, she rushed decisively to the kitchen, filled up a big bowl with cold water, and dumped it squarely onto Joel's face.
The shock of freezing water made Joel jerk, instantly sobering him up as his drunken haze vanished in an instant.
Joel swiped the water off his face and, spotting Kiera standing there with a basin, gave her a confused frown.
"What are you doing?" he grumbled.
Annoyed, Kiera put her hands on her hips and shot him a glare.
