"What else would I be doing? Kaia has taken off!" Kiera snapped.
Joel jolted in shock, springing to his feet.
"Where? Where'd she run off to?" he blurted out, frantic.
Kiera was speechless, rolling her eyes so hard they nearly got stuck.
"Some top bodyguard you are. Kaia disappears, and you're passed out here like roadkill with zero sense of danger. You didn't even notice she was gone!" Kiera spat.
Joel was practically bouncing off the walls with worry. "Can you just skip the lecture and tell me where she went?"
"Why are you yelling at me? She's the one who's missing, and you didn't even notice. That's on you! Don't take it out on me just because you messed up. Am I your punching bag now or what?" Kiera shot back, fed up with Joel's attitude.
"You—" Joel sputtered, completely at a loss for words.
'Is she really this dense? No matter what I say, it's like talking to a wall,' Joel thought.
Kiera glared right back at him, refusing to back down. "What? Tell me I'm wrong."
Joel's face turned stormy, about to fire back, when he saw Paxton stride in from the doorway.
"What are you two yelling about? What's going on here?" Paxton asked, glancing between them.
Joel shot Kiera a frosty look. "Kaia's gone, and Kiera knows exactly where she is, but she just refuses to tell me!"
Kiera rolled her eyes at him again.
"With your attitude? Keep dreaming if you think I'll spill anything," Kiera sneered.
Joel scowled, barely containing his frustration. "Do you have any idea how crucial Kaia is to all of Wustriland? We're at a crossroads here. Enough with the theatrics, just tell me what you know!"
"Okay, okay, that's enough. Stop it!" Paxton cut in sharply, breaking up their argument.
He hurried in between them, shutting down the back-and-forth bickering for good.
"Out with it, Kiera. Where did Kaia go? Speak up, now!" Paxton urged, his tone leaving no room for argument.
"She knocked me out, so I honestly have no idea where she went," Kiera admitted. The moment she said that, Joel and Paxton's faces instantly turned pale.
Before Joel could get another word out, Kiera tilted her chin up, a hint of smugness in her voice.
"But don't worry, Grandpa. Just before I passed out, I managed to grab her sleeve and planted a tracker on her," Kiera said, clearly pleased with herself.
Paxton gave Kiera a proud pat on the shoulder. "That's my girl! Well done!"
Kiera raised her chin higher, her face brimming with pride.
"Obviously! My genius reputation isn't just talk. If I didn't have real skills, how could anyone call me a genius?" Kiera said with a cocky grin.
Kiera couldn't help silently adding to herself, 'Honestly, I'm good at pretty much everything. I've got every right to be proud. But every time Kaia shows up, she manages to put me in my place. Again and again. There's no way I am just gonna roll over and admit defeat. If I keep trying and pushing myself even harder, sooner or later I'll catch up and beat her at her own game.'
Joel could finally breathe a little easier after hearing Kiera's words.
"You put a tracker on her, right? So what are you waiting for? Get your phone, pull up her location now! I'm grabbing the squad and we're heading out!" Joel barked, urgency plain in his voice.
Kiera scoffed in response, her displeasure clear.
This time, she didn't bother with any more words. Instead, she whipped out her phone and honed in on Kaia's signal.
"Found her! She's on some nameless island close by," Kiera announced, her tone crisp and triumphant.
Joel leaned in for a quick look, then immediately pulled out his phone to call his team together.
Paxton wasn't wasting any time either. He started rallying the entire Yates family, getting everyone ready to move.
In just over ten minutes, the whole crew was assembled, and they set off in full force toward Kaia's location.
