Inside the villa, Augusto Lloyd had only just quieted down for a moment before he started mouthing off again. "Dr. Bennett, did you see that?"
Kaia turned her head to look at him, her voice so calm that it showed not the slightest fluctuation. "See what?"
"With you dropping by, even my simple villa suddenly feels completely brightened up—like it's come alive," Augusto said with a smirk.
Irritation flashed in Kaia's eyes, and she shot him a sharp, icy glare. "Cut the crap. Where's Tobias?" she demanded.
Augusto grinned and replied, "Dr. Bennett, no need to rush. I've got some excellent coffee from Wustriland here. Why don't you sit down and let's have a good chat? As for Mr. Moreno, I'll send someone to fetch him in a bit."
Kaia was worried about Tobias, but since Augusto wouldn't let her see him and she didn't have any better options for now, she forced herself to sit down across from him.
Augusto waved his hand, and one of his guys quickly served up some coffee, placing it on the table.
He grabbed the coffee pot and personally poured a cup, offering it to Kaia with a courteous gesture. "Dr. Bennett, please," he invited.
Kaia accepted the drink, but paused for a second, her movements slowing as a thought flickered through her mind.
Noticing her hesitation, Augusto quickly added with a grin, "No worries, Dr. Bennett. The coffee's clean—I wouldn't dare mess with you."
Kaia absently rubbed her fingertips, a sly, unreadable smile playing at her lips. Then, with an air of calm indifference, she slid the drink back toward Augusto. "Who knows if it's poisoned or not? Unless you drink it first, how can I be sure?" she said coolly.
Augusto just shrugged, grabbed the cup, and knocked back the coffee in one chug. Lifting the empty cup for her inspection, he flashed a cocky grin. "There, I drank it. Satisfied now, Dr. Bennett?"
Kaia nodded with a half-smile, her expression almost playful. "Alright, I'll trust you—just this once."
Augusto had his man bring over a fresh cup, then poured Kaia another coffee himself and handed it to her.
This time, Kaia accepted. Bringing the cup to her lips, she sipped lightly. "You went to such lengths to snatch Tobias, and now you've dragged me here—what do you really want?" Kaia asked, her voice icy and blunt.
Augusto set his cup aside, chuckling in response. "Dr. Bennett, I like how straight you are. Fine, I won't play games. Word is you've been upgrading that nanomaterial—you made any breakthroughs lately? Got results yet?"
Kaia smirked, sinking lazily into the sofa with almost regal ease. Her cool, sharp gaze had already cut through Augusto's façade, reading him as easily as an open book. "So that's why you didn't just kill me—you dragged me all the way here to steal my research," she said, her tone laced with biting sarcasm.
August's face twitched, his smile stiffening for a second. He moved his lips, trying to say something, but Kaia interrupted before he could even start.
"Dr. Lloyd, I'll be honest—I always thought you were a schemer with a nasty streak. But your scientific achievements can't be denied. You've really pushed humanity forward, and that deserves respect. Too bad now you're trying to take shortcuts and steal someone else's work. Like, seriously? Pretty much everyone in our field would find that shameful."
Kaia's sharp sarcasm made Augusto's face turn ugly in an instant. But it was only for a moment—he quickly gathered himself and gave her a cold, icy smile.
