"Steal your research? Who even knows if I did? Aren't all these results mine? When did you ever do any research?" Augusto shot back.
Kaia's eyes flashed with barely contained anger, but she kept her cool. "Dr. Lloyd, you really have mastered the art of being shameless," she fired back.
Augusto just shrugged, totally unfazed by her words. "Say whatever you like. Once the upgraded New Nanotech is released, everyone will recognize it as my breakthrough. The world will only ever associate it with Dr. Lloyd. And you, Dr. Bennett? You'll be nothing—completely erased from the story," he said with a smug grin.
Kaia shot Augusto a cool glance. "If I give you the research files, what happens to me and Tobias?" she asked evenly.
"Of course, you two walk out of here completely safe," Augusto assured her.
Kaia raised an eyebrow even higher. "Oh, really? Since when did you start being so kind-hearted?" she shot back.
Augusto thumped his chest with a cocky grin. "I'll stake my reputation as a scientist on it—is that good enough for you?" he declared.
Kaia couldn't hold back a sarcastic smile, the corners of her mouth curling up. "Your reputation as a scientist? After stooping that low, what's it even worth anymore? Not a single person would give a damn," Kaia scoffed.
Augusto's composure finally cracked under Kaia's relentless taunts, his voice dropping to a low, dangerous growl. "Dr. Bennett! Don't forget—you're the one under my knife now. Before you start throwing insults, you'd better consider your situation."
Kaia remained perfectly composed, her calm gaze showing she wasn't rattled in the slightest. "Oh, really? Are you sure it's not you who needs something from me? Aren't you here asking for the new nanotech upgrade materials data?" she retorted, her tone cool and unflinching.
A predatory gleam flickered in Augusto's eyes. "So what if I do? Right now, your lives—and Mr. Moreno's—are in my hands. I call the shots, and you'll do whatever I say," he sneered.
Kaia just snorted coldly, her contempt unmistakable.
Augusto's expression froze, the tension in his features deepening at her derision. "What's so funny?" he snapped.
Kaia drawled, her voice languid and cutting, "If killing us was your goal, you would've done it right away. So why all this back-and-forth? Clearly, you need something from me."
As she spoke, Kaia lifted her chin with icy pride, looking down at Augusto like he was barely worth her notice. The naked contempt in her eyes set his jaw clenching and made the veins on his forehead stand out, his face cycling through shades of anger and embarrassment.
Kaia ignored whatever reaction he might have had, pushing herself up from the sofa with cold determination. "I'm done wasting time. Take me to him—now. Otherwise, this conversation is over."
Augusto studied her—her icy expression, radiating a warning to stay back. Yet beneath that frost, he could sense her stubbornness; she wouldn't budge until she saw Tobias, no matter what.
He was actually afraid she'd clam up and he'd be left with nothing. Left with no other move, Augusto just waved to one of his guys. "Soren, take her to see Mr. Moreno," he instructed.
"Got it," Soren replied, stepping forward and gesturing for Kaia to follow.
"Dr. Bennett, this way, please," he said.
"Alright," Kaia replied, following Soren up to the third floor of the villa.
As they arrived at the room tucked behind the left-hand corner, Soren stopped. "Mr. Moreno is here," he said.
Kaia moved closer, her fingers trembling ever so slightly as she wrapped them around the doorknob. She drew in a deep breath and shoved the door open.
