Kaia kept holding her breath all along, worried she might witness something horrible. But luckily, Tobias's situation wasn't nearly as frightening as she'd imagined.
He was still lying there with his eyes closed, but his wounds were gradually healing—it was obvious Augusto had given him top-notch care.
A weight seemed to ease from Kaia's chest, though her steps stayed slow and deliberate as she approached Tobias. When her fingers met his cold ones, a surge of grief hit her—a sharp sting in her nose, her eyes reddening as she struggled to hold back the tears.
But almost instantly, Kaia realized something was wrong.
She whipped her head around, her piercing gaze zeroing in on Augusto. Kaia demanded, "Did you inject him with a sedative?"
Augusto wore a look of pure innocence. He said, "Dr. Bennett, you can't blame me for this. Mr. Moreno is just impossible to keep under control—no matter what my guys tried, he was too much for them. I had no other choice but to do this, just to give him a peaceful environment to heal. If he'd kept struggling, he would've torn his wounds wide open."
Kaia's lips curled into a faint smile, her eyes glinting with a trace of sarcastic amusement. She raised an eyebrow. "Oh? Should I be giving you my gratitude now?"
"You're welcome," Augusto replied, putting on his most gracious face. He grinned, "Come on, we're both top dogs in the research world—watching each other's backs is basically second nature."
Kaia nodded, playing along as if she genuinely agreed. She said, "You took really good care of Tobias, and since we're supposed to help each other out, how about I help you upgrade this new nanomaterial?"
Augusto was instantly thrilled, his eyes practically sparking with excitement. "You really mean it?" he asked, unable to hide his eagerness.
Kaia nodded, her gaze unwavering. "Of course I'm willing. Didn't you say we should look out for each other? But honestly, that upgrade's barely a reward for someone like you—I've got an even bigger surprise in store."
Augusto lit up with delight, though a hint of suspicion crept in; he couldn't help but wonder what Kaia was really getting at. "What kind of reward?" he pressed, curiosity flickering in his voice along with a trace of caution.
Kaia curved her lips into a sly smile. "Aren't you feeling a bit uncomfortable right now?"
Augusto barely had time to react before a vicious itch shot up from his feet, forcing him to scratch, totally unable to control himself. As soon as he started scratching, it was like flipping a switch—the itch exploded everywhere, driving him absolutely frantic, so much that he let out a low, stifled groan in agony.
All the while, he kept glaring at Kaia, his eyes full of hatred and frustration as he scratched furiously. "When did you poison me?" he spat, voice shaking in anger and disbelief.
Kaia gave a lazy, almost mocking arch of her eyebrow, looking completely unfazed. "Take a guess," she shot back, her tone teasing.
Augusto gritted his teeth, trying to ignore the itch that kept getting worse with every passing second, his mind racing as he replayed everything Kaia had done since she walked in.
Suddenly, it hit him—his eyes went wide with shock and fury as he stared at Kaia. "Was it when we were having coffee? Is that when you poisoned me?" he demanded, voice trembling with rage.
Kaia remained silent, but her silence was all the answer he needed.
Augusto was itching like mad, and no matter how much he tried to fight it, he couldn't stop scratching. "Dr. Bennett, I really had no idea you were this skilled in both medicine and poison," he grumbled.
Kaia shrugged off his words, a hint of mischief in her tone. "Trust me, you don't even know half of what I can do."
"You..." Augusto got out, but before he could finish, the sensation crashed over him like a tidal wave.
