In an instant, the unbearable itch completely swallowed him up, leaving him no room for anything else. Utterly consumed by it, he could only stand frozen in place, clawing at himself desperately, mind blank to everything except the maddening urge to scratch.
In an instant, Soren and the other masked men whipped their guns around, all of them trained on Kaia. "She drugged Dr. Lloyd! We have to catch her!" Soren shouted.
The others barked, "On it!"
As they tried to get closer, Kaia gestured sharply for them to stay back.
"Easy now," she said coolly. "I'll give you a bit of friendly advice—there's literally nobody on earth who can deal with the poison running through Dr. Lloyd except me. So if any of you piss me off, your precious Dr. Lloyd is gonna be screwed, and that's on you."
Augusto's skin was already scratched and bleeding, yet he still held his gaze at Kaia, his pride unwavering. "You really think your words can scare us?" Augusto growled, his anger barely kept in check.
Kaia cracked a smile. "You guys all know Dr. Dean—the legendary healer from Wustriland, right?"
Augusto could feel a sense of dread creeping up inside him. "Yeah, I've heard of her. But what's your point in bringing her up right now?" he asked.
Kaia's smile stretched wider, a teasing glint flashing in her eyes. She quipped, "You just said I'm a whiz with medicine and poison. So why do you think I mentioned Dr. Dean? Isn't it obvious—or do I really need to draw you a picture?"
Augusto's eyes widened in shock as the realization hit him like a punch. "What? Don't tell me… you…"
He was left completely speechless, just staring in total shock. It was like his mind had been hit by a tsunami—he couldn't calm down for a moment. Augusto's mind reeled in disbelief. He couldn't believe it—there was no way anyone could have seen that coming.
'Wait, so Dr. Bennett is actually Dr. Dean?' he mused.
That look on Augusto's face didn't escape Kaia; her voice was cool as ice, utterly unreadable. "From your reaction, it's clear you've heard the name. So, tell me—do you honestly think there's anyone else in this world who could undo the poison I gave you? Not a chance," she said, calm and completely sure of herself.
With every word Kaia tossed at them, Augusto and his men scowled more fiercely, their faces growing harder and colder with each sentence.
Kaia gave them a boring glance. "Go ahead—find another doctor if you think that'll save you. But in less than an hour, the itch will drive you mad. You'll claw at your skin, beg for someone to end it, and in the end, you'll tear yourself apart."
No matter how much Augusto refused to believe Kaia, his body was beyond his control—the itch just kept getting worse, overrunning every thought, leaving him no chance to doubt her words.
Clenching his teeth so hard they nearly cracked. Augusto glared at Kaia and spat out, "Just say it—what do you want?"
'If I'd realized just how damn cunning Dr. Bennett is, I would've been way more on guard,' he cursed silently, regret twisting in his gut. If only he'd been a little more careful, he wouldn't have ended up in such a mess.
Kaia had played her cards just right—all that talking was to make Augusto finally break. "My terms are simple," Kaia replied, her tone crisp. "Let us off first. The antidote? You'll get it after we leave."
Augusto frowned, second-guessing everything Kaia said, weighing whether there was any truth behind her words.
Soren narrowed his eyes and stepped forward, sneering, "Dr. Lloyd, she's a con—don't trust a word. Grab her and make her talk. A few rounds of real pain and she'll break and tell you where the antidote is."
Augusto had been hesitating, not sure if Kaia's words were to be trusted, but after Soren chimed in, he felt a dark satisfaction rise within him. He shot Kaia a cold, sinister glare, eyes full of unspoken threats.
"You're right," Augusto barked. "Tie her up and make her talk—the antidote, no matter what it takes!"
