As soon as Augusto finished speaking, Soren and the group of masked men started inching closer to Kaia, their guns raised threateningly.
Kaia stood her ground, watching them close in from every direction, her composure untouched, radiating an unshakeable sense of fearlessness.
Soren was nearly on her when Kaia finally spoke, cool and unhurried. "Torture me if you want—force, pain—it won't make me talk. You could keep at it for days and get nothing. The problem, Dr. Lloyd, is your time's almost up—you've got an hour."
She paused to check her watch, then added, "Oh, wait, scratch that. Five minutes have already ticked by. That means you've got fifty-five minutes left. Think you can hold out that long?" Kaia taunted.
"You..." Each time Augusto tried to speak, the itching surged even fiercer, gnawing at him from within.
No matter how desperately he scratched, clawed at himself, nothing brought relief. Finally, the agony overwhelmed him—Augusto dropped to the floor, writhing and rolling uncontrollably.
"A-Ah!" His agonized screams echoed throughout the entire villa.
"Dr. Lloyd!" Soren yelled, his voice shaking as he darted over to haul Augusto up from the floor. "How are you? Are you all right?"
Augusto was drenched in cold sweat, his face deathly pale and twisted with pain. Right then, he finally understood just how ruthless and effective the poison Kaia hit him with really was.
He looked up at her, jaw clenched so hard it hurt, and snarled through his teeth, "If I let you and Mr. Moreno go, you'll really hand over the antidote? No tricks?"
Kaia gave a noncommittal nod, her expression as calm as ever. "Exactly. And I swear on my name as Dr. Bennett—if we make it out of here safe and sound, the antidote will be in your hands the second I'm back. You know me—my word is gold. I don't make empty promises. Unlike some people whose reputation isn't worth a damn."
Augusto's face twisted into a tight, painful grimace at her blatant mockery. No matter how much her words stung, they were nothing compared to the relentless itch ripping through his body.
It was like a swarm of ants was feasting on him from the inside out—he couldn't live with it, and he couldn't die from it. No exaggeration—the itch was enough to drive him insane.
Soren stood there, glaring daggers at Kaia, his eyes brimming with hostility. "Dr. Bennett, do you really think you're any better, using such sneaky tricks to poison Dr. Lloyd?" he snapped.
"I never said I was some saint," Kaia replied, her voice steady. "But at least I'd never stoop so low as to steal someone else's work. Now that's truly shameless."
Soren choked on his words, knowing full well he couldn't beat Kaia in a war of words.
Seeing Augusto on the verge of collapse, Kaia ignored Soren and stood, walking straight toward him with quiet, commanding air. "Dr. Lloyd," she said coldly, "you're about to break. So stop wasting time and make your choice."
Augusto, drenched in sweat, stared hard at Kaia for what felt like an eternity. Finally, he took a shaky breath, his jaw clenched so tight it looked painful, and forced himself to make a decision.
"Fine! I'll let you two go," he growled, his voice ragged from the pain. "But once you're back, you better get me that antidote right away—don't mess around."
Soren was stunned—he hadn't expected Augusto to cave so easily. He started to speak up, hoping to persuade him otherwise. "Dr. Lloyd, are you sure you want to do this? What if—"
Before Soren could finish, Augusto cut in with a furious roar. "What, you just want to stand there and watch me die? Or have you secretly been waiting to snatch my position, hoping I'd keel over sooner?"
Soren faltered, his mouth opening and closing without a sound. After a tense beat, he lowered his head and muttered, "I wouldn't dare."
Watching Soren shrink back into the corner, Augusto waved his hand at his men nearby. "Let them go," he ordered.
"Yes, sir," the men replied in unison, quickly stepping aside to clear a path.
