Kaia wasted no time, heading straight to bed and gently helping Tobias to his feet. She reached for his strong hand, guiding it onto her shoulder as if to shield and steady him, her movements filled with care.
Feeling the steady rise and fall of Tobias's breath beside her, Kaia was overcome by a sense of safety deeper than she'd ever known. Her heart, at last, felt at ease. "Tobias, hold on. I'm taking you home," she said firmly.
Step by step, Kaia and Tobias moved toward the main entrance. The tension was palpable—none of Augusto's men had the nerve to stop them, not a single one daring to make a move.
They had barely taken a few steps when the thunderous roar of helicopter blades exploded overhead. Kaia looked up—and there it was, the unmistakable emblem of the Combat Division emblazoned on its side.
"Dr. Lloyd, we've totally walked right into her trap! She wasn't alone at all—she's been making fools out of us this whole time!" Soren yelled, his voice exploding with rage.
Augusto glared up at the helicopter roaring overhead, his anger reaching a fever pitch. He gestured wildly at Kaia and Tobias, yelling, "Damn it! How dare she mess with me? All of you, go after them—bring them back to me! I want them ripped apart!"
"Yes, sir!" the men echoed, instantly surging forward to cut Kaia and Tobias off, boxing them in from every direction.
Kaia hadn't expected things to go sideways like this. With the crowd closing in, she didn't think twice—she grabbed Tobias's hand and took off, pulling him with her as she charged forward.
Their pursuers refused to relent, charging Kaia and Tobias with desperate determination. Kaia kept her gaze fixed ahead, pulling Tobias with all her strength, every muscle burning as she pushed herself to keep moving, to get them as far away as possible.
Once the pounding footsteps behind them started to fade, she finally dared to look back, stealing a glance to see how much distance they'd managed to open up from Augusto's crew.
Seeing they were gaining distance, Kaia exhaled in relief, the tension in her chest beginning to ease—until the moment she glanced back, and her foot suddenly slipped.
The next instant, the world lurched and spun as she plummeted, everything blurring into a dizzy whirl. Even then, she barely thought of herself—only Tobias, the fear eclipsing everything else.
"Tobias!" Kaia cried out, her voice cracking with panic. The name tore from her lips, pure instinct, before her mind could catch up.
Tobias, dropping right beside her, seemed to respond to her frantic call. His eyes flew open; in a rush, he threw out his arm, spun her so she wouldn't take the hit, and pulled her tightly against his chest. His strong hand cupped the back of her head, and with his body, he cocooned her—protecting her from every impact.
Feeling how he shielded her so fiercely, Kaia's heart was flooded with warmth—a rush of emotion so overwhelming that her eyes burned with unshed tears.
They tumbled and rolled endlessly before finally hitting the ground with a hard thud. Tobias let out a low, muffled groan—so close it sent a sharp jolt through Kaia.
Every trace of pain in his voice cut straight through Kaia, hurting more than any wound could. "Tobias—are you okay?" she asked, her voice trembling with worry.
Kaia couldn't focus on anything else—frantically grabbing Tobias's hand, running her fingers over him to check if he was hurt, her heart pounding in her chest.
Seeing the worry etched in Kaia's eyes, Tobias gave a faint, gentle smile. He reached out, his large hand closing around hers, his deep gaze soft with warmth. "I'm fine," he said quietly. "Really—don't worry."
Kaia caught the easy tone in Tobias's voice, but she couldn't quiet the anxiety gnawing at her. Ignoring his reassurances, she examined him closely for any wounds, any sign he might be hurt. "Really? Not even a scratch?" she pressed, her concern slipping through.
Tobias, for reasons only he knew, purposely let out a quiet sigh. Kaia's heart seized up, and she instantly looked up at him, anxiety written all over her face.
"What's wrong?" she asked nervously.
Tobias pointed at the spot over his heart. "Everything else is fine," he said, his voice playful. "But right here, my heart feels kind of strange."
