"I really did have some important stuff going on these days, but now everything's sorted, so I'm calling you. Whenever you're free, just tell me the time and I'll make sure Ms. Unity is there," Kaia replied.
"I'm good anytime—just tell me when Ms. Unity's free, and I'll make it work," Collin replied, totally amped.
Kaia tapped her chin for a sec, then quickly settled on time. "Let's do tomorrow at six, at the Serene Coffee Lounge," she suggested.
"Awesome, totally works for me!" Collin said, sounding like a kid who'd just scored a new toy. "Thanks a ton, Miss Bennett. Seriously, I owe you one!"
"Really, it's just a little help—no need for thanks," Kaia replied with a small smile. "Alright then, it's set. See you tomorrow afternoon."
Collin was practically bouncing off the walls with excitement.
The next afternoon, Kaia headed out at 5.30 pm. But just as she stepped outside, her phone rang—it was Samantha, all fired up as usual.
"Miss Bennett, do you have time right now? I wanna come over and learn some martial arts from you!" Samantha chirped.
Kaia opened the car door and hopped in. "I'm really busy at the moment. Just practice on your own for now—promise I'll help you out when I'm free."
"Alright then, you take care of your stuff," Samantha replied, totally understanding—she knew her master was always super busy.
Then, like something suddenly occurred to her, Samantha scratched her head, sounding confused. "You know, it's kinda strange—my grandpa was over the moon today, but all secretive, acting like he's got some big meeting planned, but nobody knows who it is."
Kaia gave a playful, mysterious smile. "Maybe it's someone you know."
"Someone I know? Honestly, besides you, I can't think of anyone who'd make him that happy," Samantha said, starting to feel like something weird was up.
"But Miss Bennett, why do you say that? Are you hiding something? Do you know what's going on?" she pressed, her curiosity getting the better of her.
"You could say that," Kaia answered, her voice lazy and, if anything, a little bit smug.
Samantha couldn't help herself—she kept pestering, "Who is it? Who is it? Miss Bennett, come on, tell me! I really wanna know who's got my grandpa grinning like that!"
"It's not a big deal. Just wait till your grandpa gets home—he'll spill the beans," Kaia replied, her smile loaded with mystery.
Samantha was hooked now—there was no way she was letting this juicy secret slip by without getting an answer. She put on her cutest, most pleading tone, whining on the phone, "Miss Bennett, please, just tell me!"
Kaia just laughed and dodged, staying mysterious. "I told you, it's nobody. Okay, gotta run—I'm busy!"
With that, Kaia ended the call, leaving Samantha staring at her now-dark phone screen, racking her brain but still coming up empty.
When Kaia walked into the Serene Coffee Lounge, she spotted Melvin, Emma, and Andrea sitting off to the right.
Just then, Melvin and Emma looked her way. The moment they saw Kaia, they were instantly reminded of how she'd humiliated them at Collin's art show. Their faces darkened, and their eyes were filled with pure disgust.
"She's like a bad penny—no matter where we go, we can't get rid of this problem child!"
"Just seeing her makes my skin crawl. I wish she'd just vanish from my sight."
Andrea heard them, but for once, she didn't join in their insults. As she watched Kaia walking straight toward them, a storm of complicated emotions flickered across her face.
In her mind, Kaia's figure seemed to overlap more and more with the image of Dr. Bennett she'd seen on stage at the new nanomaterial launch event. But the more she looked, the less sure she was.
'Is Kaia really Dr. Bennett?' Andrea wondered, her mind spinning.
The more Andrea thought about it, the more tangled her feelings became. Inwardly, she started praying all over again. 'Please, don't let Kaia be Dr. Bennett. Please, please, don't let it be her!'
