Melvin paused, glancing around to make sure no one was listening. Then he beckoned Emma over. "Keep it down. Come closer, and I'll tell you," he whispered.
Emma rushed over, eyes wide with excitement. "Hurry up, spill it!"
Andrea, sitting nearby, couldn't help but get curious too. She dragged her chair over, eager to catch every word. "Yeah, Grandpa, spill it already!"
Seeing the two of them practically hanging on his every word, Melvin didn't bother with the suspense anymore. He just blurted it out. "That big shot? It's Ms. Unity!" Melvin whispered, his voice barely above a breath.
Emma and Andrea both froze, their eyes going wide in disbelief. Everyone knew Faye was a living legend in the art world. Acquiring one of his paintings was nearly impossible, and if someone managed it, it would be worth a king's ransom.
It was hard to believe that even a coffee lounge like this had someone like him pulling the strings; honestly, it was almost too wild to accept.
Emma swallowed, regret creeping in. Thinking about how she'd just mouthed off to the staff, her heart skipped a beat. "Thank goodness you stopped me just now. If you hadn't, I could've really caused some serious trouble," Emma stammered, her voice trembling.
Melvin gave her shoulder a reassuring pat. "Although it's just a rumor, if it's lasted this long, there's probably something to it. Just don't overthink it; let's stay sharp, that's all."
Emma pressed a hand to her chest, cold sweat pouring down her face and even soaking through her back. Clearly, the way she'd just snapped was still haunting her.
"I know, but if Ms. Unity ever caught wind of this because of me, the Bennett family would be totally ruined in this circle. I'm seriously relieved I kept my voice down—if someone had overheard and snitched, the consequences would be unimaginable!"
Before this, they had tried currying favor with Collin, who had been a big name in the art world. But compared to Faye, the undisputed top figure, Collin hadn't even come close. Collin and Faye hadn't been in the same league—there was simply no comparison between them.
Just thinking about it made Emma even more thankful she'd kept her voice down. If she'd let loose any louder, her offhand remark could've dragged the whole Bennett family into some real trouble.
Andrea was listening and immediately clapped her hand over her mouth. "I-I'd better keep quiet too. No way I want to end up offending the wrong person."
Melvin was actually pretty pleased seeing Andrea so quick on the uptake. "Well, well. No matter where you are, best to keep your mouth in check and stay careful," Melvin said, nodding with approval.
Andrea nodded earnestly. "You're right, Grandpa."
Just as they were chatting, a portly man in a crisp suit, sporting a manager's name tag, came hustling out from the staff area at Serene Coffee Lounge. He was short, had an enormous beer belly, and his legs were thick and stumpy—almost cartoonishly so.
But despite his build, the guy was so quick, it was like he left an afterimage in his wake—racing like missing even a second would cost him something big. "Leo! Leo!" the manager shouted, his voice practically tearing through the place in panic.
Leo, who'd helped Melvin earlier, perked up when he heard, jogging over to the manager's side. "Manager, what's up? Why are you sprinting like something's on fire?"
The manager grabbed Leo's arm in a rush, practically freaking out. "Where is she? Where did that lady disappear to? You've been standing here all this time—are you telling me you didn't see a thing?"
