At the mention of Kaia, Emma's face darkened. "When have your father and I ever lied to you?"
Ruth was at a loss for words, muttering under her breath, "When Kaia was living with us, she caused nothing but trouble every day. She never did a single thing to make me happy. But now, how did she suddenly become the famous Ms. Unity? How is this even possible?"
Not just Ruth, but the entire Bennett family found the situation utterly unbelievable.
Yet the facts were right before them, leaving no room for doubt.
At this point, Johnny spoke up, "No matter how high Kaia's status is now, she still carries Bennett blood. Why don't we just ask her to paint something for us? If we swallow our pride and ask her, I don't think she'd refuse."
"You know how stubborn that girl is! But we can't just let this go. We should at least try and see if there's any room for negotiation." As Melvin spoke, his gaze swept around the room and finally settled on Lincoln and Ruth.
"You're Kaia's parents. You're closer to her. You'd probably have a better chance talking to her than we would. Why don't you go ask her?" Melvin added.
Lincoln's face tightened, his emotions indescribably complex. "I can't bring myself to do it! Not long ago, I publicly declared in a livestream that I would never seek her out again."
Melvin then turned to Ruth, but before he could speak, she immediately shook her head. "Me too. I swore an oath in front of Morganburg University, and it was recorded."
After they finished speaking, the two exchanged a glance and simultaneously sighed.
Although they now knew Kaia was so talented, they still had their pride. The thought of humbling themselves to beg their own daughter was something they simply couldn't bring themselves to do.
Thinking this, Ruth instinctively looked toward Melvin. "Dad, you're so respected. Maybe you should go."
Melvin had already broached the topic earlier, but Kaia had firmly rejected him.
Now, he found it even harder than Lincoln and Ruth to swallow his pride and ask Kaia.
Melvin said, "If you can't bring yourselves to do it, how do you expect me to swallow my pride? Besides, you know how sharp-tongued that girl is. Every time we face her, we end up utterly humiliated. If we go ask her now, who knows how she'll mock us. In short, whoever wants to go can go, but I'm certainly not going.
"That girl really hid her identity so well. Why didn't she reveal it earlier? If we'd known she was so outstanding, would we have ever driven her out?"
Bringing this up made Ruth feel deeply uncomfortable, a faint flush of embarrassment appearing on her face. "Actually... Kaia did mention to me that she'd won an award for her painting. Not just that, she also told me she could cure Dad's illness... but we never believed her..."
Ruth felt she bore some responsibility for how things had turned out.
But before this, Kaia had told countless "lies."
'How was I supposed to know she was actually being honest those times?' Ruth wondered, regret creeping in.
Throughout the conversation, Andrea, who was usually the most vocal, remained silent, even trying to hide in a corner to make herself less noticeable.
Phoebe, watching from nearby, curled her lips into a cold smile. She stood up and said loudly, "Lincoln, Emma, don't you think there's something strange about this?"
