As Easton kept spilling the details, Grace broke out in a cold sweat.
By the end, her shirt was drenched and her hands were practically dripping with nerves.
Panic practically swallowed her whole. She whirled on Easton, screaming at the top of her lungs.
"Don't even try to shove this mess onto me. You messed up, lost all that money without a clue, and now you won't even admit your screw-up—but you've got the guts to frame me instead? Shameless," she yelled.
"Miss Adkins, isn't it a bit much? You were the one who told me to transfer the money. Now you're tossing all the blame on me? Sure, you're the pampered heiress of the Adkins family. No matter what goes wrong, you land on your feet," Easton shot back.
"But me? I'm not you. I've got a whole family depending on me. If I lose this job, we're all screwed. This manager gig? I busted my guts for it—worked my way from rock bottom, drank till my stomach bled from the stress just to get this far. How can you erase all that effort with one careless sentence?" Easton's words cracked with raw desperation.
Grace glared at Easton, nowhere close to admitting anything. Her eyes burned with threat and warning.
"Don't give me that. You're just trying to pin this on me. Say whatever you want, it's your screw-up, not mine. Just wait, you're the one getting canned," she spat.
Easton didn't want to cause this kind of scene, but Grace had left him no choice. He sucked in a breath, pulled his phone from his pocket, and readied to play the recording.
"Miss Adkins, I saw this coming. You'd just deny everything if trouble started, so I made sure to record our chat. Let's hear it together, shall we?" Easton said.
"Recording?" Grace gasped, her heart dropping like a stone.
'That snake Easton actually had the guts to record me?' Grace thought. 'He's probably just bluffing… but I can't crack, not until the very last second.'
"You think that'll scare me into confessing? I'm not admitting to anything I didn't do," she shot back.
Easton saw that Grace was still stubbornly denying everything, so with a resigned shake of his head, he tapped play on the recording and turned the volume all the way up.
Soon, Easton and Grace's voices echoed throughout the room.
Grace said, "Transfer three million dollars to the account I'll tell you. I'll make up any shortfall myself."
Easton's voice sounded uncertain. "Miss Adkins, that's three million dollars. Did you get Mr. Adkins's permission? If anyone investigates, I can't take that responsibility."
Grace snapped back, dripping with entitlement, "I'm the Adkins family's heiress. Everything here is mine. Why would I need his permission for a measly three million bucks? Just do what I say, or I'll toss you out of this company, and good luck ever working in Morganburg again."
Easton could only accept, a note of defeat in his voice. "Alright, Miss Adkins, but promise me if this comes back to bite us, you'll put in a good word for me with Mr. Adkins. This job means the world to me. I can't afford to lose it."
Grace said, "Fine. Why are you making such a fuss? Just do what I tell you."
When the recording finished playing, a heavy, stunned silence fell over the whole room.
He had never imagined she could sink so low. His face went from pale to livid.
"Grace," he said. "We raised you better than this. How could your heart become so twisted? How could you do something so despicable?"
