The car pulled over to the side, and the two of them strolled side by side along the seaside pier. The evening breeze, tinged with the salty chill of the ocean, brushed against them and made the air feel even colder.
Tobias shrugged off his suit jacket and offered it to Kaia.
"It's a bit cold. Here, wear this," he said gently.
"I'm really not that cold. You should keep it on," Kaia protested.
But before she could finish, Tobias had already draped the jacket over her shoulders, not taking no for an answer.
The jacket still carried his warmth, and as it wrapped around her, it didn't just chase away the chill. It made her heart, usually so calm, start to pick up some of his warmth too.
"Thanks for what you did back there in the banquet hall. But you really shouldn't have said that. This was supposed to be my problem, not yours. People might misunderstand you and think you're really with me," Kaia said, her voice soft but a little conflicted.
Tobias curved his lips in a teasing, doting smile, his eyes spoiling her as he looked at Kaia. "Let them think whatever they want."
"You really don't mind?" Kaia raised an eyebrow.
"What's there to mind? Honestly, I kinda like it," Tobias replied, sounding laid-back but with something warm in his voice.
'Wait, what?' Kaia's eyes widened as she stared hard at Tobias, her sharp mind instantly picking up on the meaning behind his words.
After a brief silence, she asked, "Don't tell me you've fallen for me?"
She'd asked him this before, and he'd always denied it.
"Yeah," Tobias said, nodding.
Kaia blinked, caught off guard by how casually he said it. She couldn't tell if he was joking or being serious.
Just as she was trying to figure it out, Tobias suddenly leaned down and gently brushed his lips against her forehead.
Kaia was stunned, unable to believe what just happened. She snapped her head up to look at him.
Tobias's lips curled into a soft smile as he met her eyes.
After a few seconds, Kaia abruptly stepped back, putting some distance between them.
"Are you serious? Or are you just messing with me?" she asked, her voice a little shaky.
Seeing her guard completely down and looking all flustered, Tobias was both wildly amused and totally smitten. He just couldn't help himself and decided to mess with her a bit.
He smiled. "Guess."
Kaia gave him a huge eye roll and just turned around to walk off.
"Hey, are you mad?" Tobias called after her.
Kaia said nothing in response.
"Sorry, I shouldn't have teased you," Tobias said, trying to sound sincere.
Kaia still ignored him, not even glancing back as she walked past the parked car. She decided to hail a taxi and head home.
Seeing Kaia about to flag down a taxi, Tobias quickly caught her hand, pulled her over, and brought her close, placing his hands on her shoulders. Looking her straight in the eye, he said seriously, "I'm serious. As for just how much I mean it... There are only eight days and twenty-two hours left until our engagement is up. You'll know by then."
Kaia studied Tobias intently, searching his face for answers, but she couldn't figure him out at all.
She said, "You're being so cryptic."
Tobias saw she wasn't mad anymore and gave her a gentle smile. "Come on, let's go home."
Once they got back to the villa, Tobias went straight to find Devin.
"Did you get everything I asked for done?" he asked.
"The ring you ordered is being rushed and will arrive before the engagement is up. As for the venue setup, that's all taken care of too," Devin replied.
"Alright, good. You can go now," Tobias said, barely able to contain his excitement for what he was about to do—something that Kaia would remember for the rest of her life.
A few seconds later, Tobias noticed Devin still standing there.
"Anything else?" Tobias asked.
Devin couldn't hold it in any longer and brought up Joel.
"Boss, Frank is no ordinary guy," he said.
