"A dispute?" Kaia raised her delicate, faint eyebrows. "Are you sure?"
"Yes, I'll have it sorted soon." Tobias hung up the phone and looked at these young women before him. "I'm sorry, my fiancée is waiting for me up ahead. I need to go. Perhaps we can chat another time."
The girls just smiled, waving at Tobias as he left. "Alright then, Mr. Moreno. We won't keep you."
"Yeah," Tobias replied coolly, turning away with his things and heading forward.
But just as he turned the corner, Kaia was already there, her smile bright, standing right in his path.
"You said you encountered a dispute in the parking lot? What brings you here then?" Kaia's face still held a slight smile, but it didn't reach her eyes, making it seem somewhat intimidating.
Tobias realized instantly she must've caught him talking to those girls. His heart skipped a beat, and for a moment, he felt rigid and guilty, lips twitching as he tried to muster an explanation.
But before he could say anything, Kaia cut in again. "Let me guess, it was three girls, right? One in red, another in blue, and one in pink. All looking pretty cute, weren't they?"
Meeting Kaia's knowing, half-smiling gaze, Tobias felt the hair on the back of his neck stand up. He shuddered and quickly stepped forward to grab her hand and admit his mistake.
"Kaia, I'm sorry. I shouldn't have lied to you just now. I'm sorry, please don't be angry with me," Tobias said.
He said "I'm sorry" twice, showing just how worried he was about Kaia's anger.
Kaia shook off his hand, her expression unreadable. "Then explain to me properly. Why did you lie?"
"Okay, I'll explain. Please, please don't be angry." Tobias, terrified that Kaia might ignore him in her anger, couldn't help but speak with extra caution. "Those girls are the daughters of long-term business partners.
"On top of that, I have a good relationship with their fathers, so I couldn't just brush them off. I chatted with them for a moment. But I was worried you'd be angry if you knew, so I lied to you. I'm sorry, Kaia, I shouldn't have deceived you."
Kaia looked at Tobias, remaining silent for a long while before speaking. "I can understand the situation. And I'm not that petty; I don't need you to cater to my feelings constantly. But what I hate most is deception. Next time something like this happens, you must tell me the truth. Otherwise, I will really be angry."
Her tone and expression were both very serious, underscoring how much she disliked being deceived by Tobias.
Realizing this, Tobias quickly raised his hand in a vow. "Kaia, I promise you, this is absolutely the last time I will ever lie to you."
Kaia was satisfied with his response. She glanced sideways at the bag Tobias was holding and didn't press the topic further. "Did you get everything? Can we go now?"
Although Kaia didn't say anything more, it was clear she had forgiven him. The heavy stone in Tobias's heart gradually eased. He wrapped his arm around Kaia's shoulders, his palm slightly damp with nervous sweat.
