A few days later, after wrapping up her work at the research institute, Kaia headed to campus.
But just as she reached the entrance, a shrill voice pierced the air.
Beatrice's voice rang out, mocking, "Look who finally decided to show up—Kaia Bennett! Haven't seen you for days. What, you think Morganburg University is your own home? Come and go as you like, huh?
"Honestly, I'm starting to wonder—are you planning to graduate at all with all these skipped classes?"
Kaia turned around to see Beatrice, flanked by two other girls, blocking her way.
One of the girls in a yellow dress covered her mouth and giggled, sweeping her eyes over Kaia with a look that dripped scorn and ridicule.
"Beatrice is totally right," the girl in yellow sneered. "Just because you were top of the SAT, you strut around campus like you own the place and act like Morganburg University's rules don't apply to you?
"Please. Even a normal college would kick you out, let alone Morganburg—this is one of the best schools in the country! If the so-called SAT superstar can't even make it to graduation, guess what? You'll be the campus joke."
The girl in the black dress jumped in, "Yeah, with your reputation, thinking you'll graduate? Dream on! Seriously, Kaia, where do you even get the nerve to try stealing Campus Belle's crush?"
Beatrice listened to their words, a smug smile curving her lips.
Kaia took in Beatrice's smug grin, a faint smirk playing on her lips as she raised an eyebrow. She drawled lazily, "Campus Belle? Isn't that title invalid now? Pretty sure someone got dethroned recently."
The girl in the black dress choked for a second, not knowing what to say.
She just stood there, totally blank for five seconds before snapping out of it, crossing her arms and glaring at Kaia.
"Just because people say you're a bit prettier than Beatrice doesn't make you Campus Belle. It's not only about looks, you know—there's way more to it! Besides, with your knack for stirring up trouble with the teachers, your attitude's nowhere near our Beatrice's! You don't even come close."
She fully expected Kaia to hang her head in shame, too embarrassed to even reply.
But instead of the humiliation they were hoping for, Kaia just smiled—a relaxed, self-assured grin playing at her lips.
"Oh, really?" Kaia said, voice lazy and completely unbothered.
The girl in black raised her chin, sneering, "Exactly! Honestly, aren't you just an empty-headed pretty girl? Beatrice may not be as gorgeous as you, but she totally outshines you in every other way."
Kaia didn't bother replying to her. Instead, she turned to Beatrice with a mischievous, confident smile.
"Beatrice, where did you dig up this clueless sidekick? She literally said you're not as pretty as me—twice! Might want to choose your squad a little more carefully," Kaia mocked.
Beatrice's face fell, looking as if she'd swallowed something bitter—completely humiliated.
The girl in black's eyes darted nervously and she quickly grabbed Beatrice's arm, explaining in a fluster, "Beatrice, I... I wasn't trying to say that! I swear, I just meant she can't hold a candle to you, not that you're less pretty. I never thought she'd twist my words like that."
"I know exactly what you mean. Relax—there's no way I'm falling for her little schemes," Beatrice said through gritted teeth. Still, she couldn't help but shoot a sharp, venomous glare at the girl in black as she spoke.
The girl in black breathed a silent sigh of relief the moment she realized Beatrice wasn't mad at her.
