"Yeah, right! Our bond's way stronger than that—no way she's gonna come between us just by running her mouth," she chimed in, trying to sound confident.
Kaia just kept that smirk on her lips, saying nothing.
That smug, mocking smile Kaia threw at her nearly made Beatrice snap right there on the spot.
She managed to pull herself together at the last second, taking a deep breath and forcing on her trademark grace, but her eyes flashed with barely-contained bitterness, betraying all the anger simmering beneath.
"Kaia, seriously, just look at how many classes you've ditched. Do you really think you have a shot at graduation? The previous dean might've cut you some slack for reasons nobody understands, but your absences are all marked down.
"No amount of sweet-talking can erase those records. Morganburg's not some playground you wander in and out of like you own it.
"If you keep screwing around, best-case scenario—you're not graduating; worst-case—you're out on your ear, with all those years totally wasted!" Beatrice sneered.
"Appreciate your concern," Kaia replied, her smile easy and breezy. "But honestly? You're not getting your wish. Getting kicked out or failing to graduate—that's one issue I'll never have."
"Spare us the act, Kaia," Beatrice scoffed with a sharp snort. "Just wait—when you're finally kicked out or can't graduate, let's see who'll be crying then!"
"Oh, really?" Kaia just shrugged, calm as ever. "We'll see about that."
Beatrice sputtered, too angry for words.
Beatrice's face turned sour, and just as she was about to fire back, a familiar voice interrupted.
Except it wasn't calling her. It was calling Kaia.
"Kaia, why are you hanging out by the door? You coming in or what?"
Everyone turned to look—Larry was walking over with that easy confidence, impossible to ignore.
Larry came to stand next to Kaia, and when he spotted Beatrice not far away, his smile faded and his expression grew more reserved.
"Was she bothering you again?" he asked, glancing at Beatrice.
Beatrice, eager not to look bad in front of the guy she liked, quickly stammered, "I... I wasn't picking on her! I just noticed she hasn't been to school for a few days, so I just came over to say hi, that's all."
Larry didn't look convinced. He turned to Kaia. "Is that what really happened?"
Kaia tossed Beatrice a lazy half-smile. "Yeah, she came over just to say hi, but her 'hello' felt more like a warning shot. Not that I blame her, though—her attitude's got your name written all over it."
"Huh?" Larry blinked, genuine confusion on his face. "How is this my fault? I haven't done anything."
"Come on, are you actually clueless or just playing dumb?" Kaia eyed him. "She's into you. Seeing how close we are, she decided I'm the enemy."
Larry couldn't help glancing in Beatrice's direction.
When Beatrice met Larry's gaze and saw the easy charm on his face, her cheeks flushed a deep red before she could stop herself.
"I… I admit it. I really do have feelings for you," she stammered, her voice trembling. "But I swear, I haven't done anything to Kaia. Please, don't get the wrong idea."
Larry frowned, at a loss for words.
He'd known Beatrice had feelings for him for a while, but he just didn't feel the same way, so he'd never said anything about it.
Larry was completely caught off guard by how blunt Kaia was—she just dropped the truth bomb in front of both of them without hesitation.
Kaia noticed Larry's silence and hesitated for a split second. 'No point beating around the bush with him—we're pretty close after all,' she thought, deciding it was better to lay things out plainly.
