'Wait, isn't Jake always giving Kaia a hard time and looking for ways to pick on her? Where's this sudden change of heart coming from? And now he's all eager to make himself look good in front of her? What the heck is going on?' everyone wondered, totally baffled.
And the way he was scrambling to show off for her? Seriously, it was downright bizarre.
"Nope, this isn't up for debate. You'll get a reward, end of story. Jake, this is officially your job now," Kaia said, making it clear she wasn't about to bend on her principles.
Jake caught the unwavering look in Kaia's eyes and knew not to press the issue.
"It's all up to you, Kaia. Just leave it to me. I promise I won't let you down," Jake assured her, sounding fired up.
"Good," Kaia said, a faint, satisfied smile appearing on her lips as she slowly stood up from her chair.
"Alright, that's it for today. Let's wrap up," she announced.
One by one, the group filed out of the conference room.
Out in the hallway, Duncan remembered how strangely Jake had acted back in the meeting and couldn't help but call out to him.
"Professor Guzman, come here for a second. I've got something to ask you," Duncan said.
Jake paused, turned around, and followed Duncan over to a quiet corner.
"What's up?" Jake asked.
Duncan glanced around to make sure nobody was eavesdropping, then said, "Weren't you always taking digs at Kaia before? So what's with you suddenly buttering her up—and going so over the top with it?
"That's so not like you, man. I'm starting to wonder if someone swapped you out overnight, or maybe you got hexed or something."
Jake gave him a massive eye roll, looking utterly exasperated.
"What are you even on about? Hexes? Please, that's just insane! If you really need me to spell it out for you again—there's no strange magic here. I'm just doing my job, serving the university and Kaia, period," Jake snapped back.
Duncan looked him up and down with a strange expression, suspicion clear in his eyes.
"No, seriously—you found something out, didn't you? Come on, spill it. What made you suddenly do a complete 180?" Duncan demanded, refusing to drop the issue.
Jake tilted his chin up, totally riding on a wave of smug superiority.
Back in that conference room, everyone had looked at him like he was some kind of idiot—when really, they were the ones blowing their chance to score points with Kaia.
The more Jake thought about it, the more he couldn't help feeling even superior.
"What could I have possibly found? Honestly, you need to chill and stop acting so paranoid," Jake snapped back.
He quickly checked the time and waved Duncan off. "Enough already. I've got things to do for Kaia. Later."
Duncan watched Jake walk away, utterly lost—his mind spinning with questions. He just couldn't wrap his head around it.
'Honestly, did someone brainwash Jake or something? This is just not normal,' Duncan thought, still floored by how bizarre everything felt.
Later that afternoon, Kaia was just stepping out of the school gates when she spotted the familiar, limited-edition Maybach gliding to a stop beside her.
The window rolled down halfway, revealing Devin's face, a faint smile playing on his lips.
"Mrs. Moreno, please, get in," Devin said, his tone respectful.
Kaia glanced at the back seat, noticing it was completely empty. With a hint of confusion, she asked, "So, what's up? Rolling solo today?"
Devin couldn't help but tease her.
"Don't tell me you're missing the boss already, Kaia?" Devin teased.
Kaia raised an eyebrow and leaned in by the window, a half-smirk on her face. "Wow, look at you—getting braver by the day, huh? So, what's up? Mr. Moreno not giving you enough work lately, or are you just here to stir up some drama about me?"
"No way, I wouldn't dare! Who am I to gossip about you? Not in this lifetime," Devin said, quickly waving off the idea. "Anyway, Mr. Moreno had the chefs cook up all your favorite dishes today and insisted you come over for a taste, so here I am as your personal chauffeur.
"As for him, he got held up by something and can't make it himself," Devin added, sounding extra polite.
As he finished, Devin felt a cold bead of sweat sliding down his forehead.
