Kaia shot him a cool glance, didn't bother saying anything else, and hopped right into the car.
"Drive," she said.
"Y-Yes, Mrs. Moreno," Devin stammered, finally letting out a breath he didn't know he'd been holding.
'Man, Mrs. Moreno is scary. That vibe of hers is off the charts,' Devin thought.
'I need to learn to keep my mouth shut and quit messing around with her. With a presence like that… Only Mr. Moreno could probably handle it,' Devin thought.
An hour later, they pulled up to Moreno Manor.
Kaia walked into the living room and spotted Tobias standing in the hallway. She frowned in confusion. "Didn't Devin say you had some important stuff to take care of and wouldn't be back until later? How did you get here before me?"
"I finished up early and came back just to have dinner with you," Tobias replied softly, turning to glance at her. Then he turned back and asked the servants to bring something down from the hallway.
Kaia, feeling curious, walked over for a closer look and realized Tobias had asked the servants to take down Faye's painting.
Tobias glanced at the painting in the servant's hands and reminded him, "Put it away, and be careful—don't let it get chipped or scratched."
"Yes, Mr. Moreno," the servant replied respectfully, nodding. When he bent down to place the painting in the box, he handled it with extra care, making each movement gentle and precise.
Kaia walked over to Tobias, curiosity in her eyes. "Isn't it nice having it up here? Why are you putting it away now?"
"Your school's hosting an exhibition and asked us to lend something from our collection. I thought Faye's original was the best piece we own, so I chose this one," Tobias explained.
"Oh, so that's what it is," Kaia replied, letting it go. But her gaze lingered on the painting for a moment longer.
Tobias noticed the look in her eyes and moved a little closer, his voice gentle, "What is it? Do you really like this painting?"
"Uh… It's not the painting I love, it's the cat in it. It looks so much like Tabby I used to have," Kaia replied. Just mentioning her old Tabby made a soft, rare warmth flash through her eyes.
"That little guy was with me all through my childhood. Honestly, I saw him as family. But you know, cats' lives are short. When I was a teenager, my Tabby left me..." she said.
Her gaze lingered on the painting, a bit wistful. "Every time I see it, I can't help but think of him. Sometimes I wish cats got to live longer, so maybe he could've stayed by my side, always."
"Ah, I get it now," Tobias murmured, but he didn't hesitate to say, "If that cat in the painting means so much to you, then after the exhibition, it's yours. I want you to have it."
Devin, standing nearby, froze and his jaw dropped, pure shock flashing across his face.
"Mr. Moreno, don't you really love this painting? And your grandpa, Mr. Keaton Moreno, treats it like a precious treasure. You know, the Coffee pot and this painting are the only things he truly cares about! If he finds out you gave it away to Mrs. Moreno, he'll totally raise hell. I get that you adore her, but isn't this… just a bit too much..."
Devin didn't even get to finish before Tobias cut him off, his voice cool and unbothered.
"Kaia's family. Honestly, what does it matter whose room it hangs in? It's still a family thing. And I know Grandpa—he'll understand. He won't even make a fuss," Tobias said.
Devin thought about it for a second and couldn't help but agree.
"Sorry for overstepping, boss," Devin muttered.
"No worries," Tobias waved it off, turning his focus back to Kaia.
"As soon as the exhibition wraps up, the painting's all yours. I'll talk to Grandpa myself, so just enjoy it, alright? Seriously, don't stress about it," Tobias assured her.
Kaia thought to herself, 'Why would I need Tobias to give me a painting? If I wanted, I could easily sketch one out myself.'
But she realized he was just being thoughtful, so she decided to turn him down nicely.
"Drive," she said.
