"I really don't need you to give it to me, Tobias," Kaia said with a gentle smile. "Honestly, I just think the cat in that painting is adorable. It looks so much like the cat I had as a kid. Just leave it hanging up. I'll come by and look at it whenever I want. No need to give it to me specially."
Tobias leaned in toward Kaia, his voice dropping to a low, velvety tone tinged with a teasing heat.
"But Kaia, what if I just want to give it to you, no matter what? You have to accept it. I'm not letting you say no," he insisted, playful but stubborn.
Kaia rubbed her ear, feeling a ticklish warmth from his voice, and quietly took a step back to put some space between them.
"Seriously, why are you so pushy? Who gives someone a present and won't even let them refuse it?" she shot back, half complaining, half amused.
Tobias closed the distance between them, his eyes shining with a smile and unmistakable tenderness.
"You got me, Kaia. I am that domineering. If I say you have to accept my gift, you have to take it—no backsies," he said, unrepentant and indulgent.
Kaia folded her arms, her lips curled in a teasing, almost defiant smirk as she stared him down.
"Is that so? You want me to take it? Well, that just makes me want to refuse even more," she quipped, refusing to back down.
Tobias realized maybe Kaia was just too shy to accept, so he decided to change his approach.
He reached out, caught her arm, and gave it a playful, gentle shake.
"Kaia, seriously, this is me putting my heart into it. Just take it, okay? Please?" Tobias pouted, his voice soft and almost boyish.
Kaia couldn't help but find it kind of adorable—this guy, all tall and tough, pulling off the puppy-dog act so well she almost felt guilty for even thinking of turning him down, like saying no would make her the villain of the century.
Kaia sighed, a bit defeated, her voice turning gentle.
"Really, Tobias, you don't have to give me the painting. If I want to see it, I'll come over and do just that. Besides, you said it yourself—we're family.
"No matter whose hands it's in, it still belongs with us. So just keep it, okay? There's no need to make a big deal out of giving it to me," she said softly.
"You're right," Tobias said, his voice gentle and warm.
From now on, everything here—including himself—belonged to Kaia anyway. If she didn't want to take the painting, he'd guard it for her, so she could come see it whenever she wished. For her, his door would always be open.
And besides, if he ever started missing her, the painting would be the perfect little excuse to ask her over—she'd never catch on to his scheme.
Yeah, when he thought about it, keeping the painting here really was the best idea.
"So, the painting will stay with me for now. Whenever you decide you want it, just say the word—it's yours, no matter what," Tobias promised, his tone imbued with quiet affection.
Kaia felt a quiet sense of relief wash over her as she realized Tobias wasn't insisting on giving her the painting anymore.
"Yeah, just keep it with you. It's not like I really need it," she said, her tone easy and unconcerned.
"Alright, whatever you say, Kaia," Tobias replied, letting it go. He took her hand and led her toward the dining room.
"Come on, let's go eat. Let's see how the new chef's cooking turns out," he said, his voice warm and inviting.
Kaia nodded.
Three days later, the exhibition kicked off.
Kaia stood in front of that painting of the tabby, and just like that, she was back in that childhood moment—hugging Tabby for the very first time.
Tabby was incredible, almost like he could always pick up on what she was saying, as if he truly got her in a way no one else did.
Whenever she was sad or feeling lost, he'd quietly snuggle up next to her, never making a fuss, just letting her know she wasn't alone—his own little way of saying, "I'm here."
All these years later, she'd never found another feline with that kind of soul, that almost magical connection.
Tabby lived on only in her memories... and in her drawings.
Kaia got so lost in her thoughts that she just stood there, staring blankly at the painting, her mind drifting back to those days with Tabby.
Just then, a sharp, unfriendly voice cut through the silence behind her.
Tobias leaned in toward Kaia, his voice dropping to a low, velvety tone tinged with a teasing heat.
