"Kaia, you're part of the campus security team, and since they put you in charge of protecting this painting, you'd better step up and take it seriously. The students coming for the exhibition will be here any minute, so don't let anything slip.
"If something happens, you can't even imagine the consequences," Beatrice said, her voice sharp and unfriendly as she stared at Kaia
Kaia smirked, meeting Beatrice's glare with a look that was half amusement, half challenge.
"Don't worry. Even if you drop the ball, I won't let the painting out of my sight," Kaia replied.
Beatrice scoffed, dripping with sarcasm. "Wow, you're really confident, aren't you? Just watch—one little mistake and you'll crash so hard you won't even know what hit you."
"Appreciate the warning, but I'll pass," Kaia said, tipping her chin up with a hint of defiance.
"That's just how sure I am. If I say the painting's not going missing, trust me. It's staying put," Kaia declared, her tone brimming with swagger.
Beatrice was so furious and stunned that for a second, she just stood there grinding her teeth, looking like she wished she could tear Kaia to pieces.
"Don't celebrate too soon. One slip-up and that painting disappears? School won't hesitate to toss you out in a heartbeat," Beatrice snapped back.
"Save your energy. You worrying about me is a waste of time—why don't you try minding your own business for once?" Kaia retorted. Just then, her phone buzzed in her pocket.
She glanced at her phone and saw it was Stephen calling from the lab.
Stephen wasn't the type to call over nothing. 'Maybe something's up with our research?' Kaia thought.
With that thought, Kaia picked up right away.
"What's going on?" she asked.
Stephen's voice came instantly from the other end.
"Dr. Bennett, we've run into a serious problem with the new nanomaterial upgrade research," Stephen said.
Kaia gave Beatrice a quick, dismissive look, then turned away and spoke softly into the phone to Stephen. "I can't talk here. Give me a sec—I'll find somewhere I can speak in private."
"Alright, Dr. Bennett," Stephen replied, waiting quietly on the other end.
Beatrice stood frozen, watching Kaia's back as she left, then turned her gaze to the priceless masterpiece in front of her. Suddenly, an evil plan started brewing in her mind.
She wanted to swipe the painting, pin the whole thing on Kaia, and let the Moreno family rip her to shreds—maybe even get her booted out of Morganburg for good so she could never show her face here again.
But if she really pulled it off and the school managed to sniff her out, she'd be done for. The Moreno family wouldn't spare her. Just thinking about it made her palms sweat.
Stuck between schemes, Beatrice remembered something huge—the whole exhibition was about keeping the family treasures hush-hush, so there were zero security cams. Just a few students standing guard.
'As long as I'm careful, nobody's ever gonna catch me,' Beatrice told herself confidently.
Even with those thoughts swirling in her head, Beatrice couldn't help but feel conflicted inside.
Just then, from the corner of her eye, she spotted Larry heading her way.
Today, Larry was rocking his school uniform, looking calm, refined—like the guy every girl dreams about.
Beatrice couldn't help the dreamy look in her eyes as she blushed bright red, her hand lifting to greet him, almost on instinct.
"Larry, you..." she called out, voice soft and a little breathless.
But before she could even get a word out, Larry just walked right past her, acting like she was invisible.
Before, Larry would always smile or say hi out of courtesy, but now? He treated her like she didn't even exist.
