'It's all because of what Kaia told him,' Beatrice seethed inside, blaming Kaia for the whole mess.
'Damn it! That bitch Kaia! She's going down for this. I swear, I'll destroy her!' Beatrice raged inwardly.
Beatrice turned back to the painting, the hesitation in her eyes slowly hardening into cold determination.
'Kaia, let's see if you can wriggle your way out of this mess. There's no way you luck out again,' Beatrice sneered inwardly.
Meanwhile, Kaia had just finished her call and returned, only to find a crowd gathered around the painting she was in charge of.
She slipped her phone back into her pocket and, as she got closer, a shrill voice suddenly cut through the air.
"Everyone, look! That's her—the one who was supposed to be guarding the real masterpiece by Ms. Unity!" someone shouted.
As soon as those words were out, everyone whipped their heads around to stare at Kaia.
Kaia stared at the patch of wall where Faye's painting used to hang—now it was just bare and empty, and her heart sank instantly.
'Did someone really snag the painting while I was away?' Kaia's thoughts spun, panic bubbling up inside her.
Before Kaia could even wrap her head around it, a young professor stormed up, his face locked in a stern glare.
"What's with you, student? You were supposed to watch over something this important, so why did you ditch your post? Now the painting's gone—are you even ready to take the fall for this?" the professor snapped.
Jake, who had come over with the crowd, heard the accusation and instantly stepped forward to stick up for Kaia.
"Hey, if you want to ask something, you don't have to sound like you're ready to tear her apart. At least give her a chance to explain—maybe there was actually a good reason," Jake said, staying cool but firm.
As he spoke, Jake just mentally shook his head.
'Unbelievable. You're just some regular professor, and you dare speak to her this way?' Jake thought, his inner tone laced with disdain.
'If you had any idea she's actually the principal, you'd probably piss your pants right here,' he snorted inwardly.
'No clue at all. Seriously, it's so ridiculous,' Jake scoffed in his mind.

'Is that badass or what?' Jake thought, feeling a surge of awe.
Hearing Jake speak up, Gethin paused for a moment, then leveled a steely look at Kaia. "Since Professor Guzman insisted, I'll grant you this chance. Tell us—what exactly made you abandon your post without authorization?"
Kaia had ducked out to handle a sudden hiccup in the nanomaterial research—no way she could go blurting out top-secret lab drama in front of a roomful of people.
Noticing Kaia's silence, Gethin immediately jumped to conclusions. 'She's obviously dodging my question. Bet she's behind this whole thing—pulled an inside job and swiped Ms. Unity's painting herself,' he thought, practically convinced already.
"Cat got your tongue? Hurry up and answer me!" Gethin barked, looking like he was ready to put her on trial.

"I had something urgent I needed to deal with," she said flatly, not giving an inch.
