Beatrice was so convincing that if Kaia hadn't known the truth herself, she might have fallen for it.
After a brief silence, Kaia curled her lips, a trace of mockery flickering in her eyes.
Just as she was about to speak, Beatrice spoke up again.
"And I just saw you sizing up the painting every now and then, always looking around to see if anyone was passing by. I kept wondering what you were sneaking around for, but I didn't expect you to actually take the painting with you," Beatrice said.
Penny rushed over when she heard the commotion, fuming at Beatrice's accusation. She burst into the center to speak up for Kaia.
"Stop making baseless accusations against Kaia! She would never do something like that!" Penny snapped.
'How clueless can these idiots be about Kaia? Who do they think they're talking about, daring to accuse her like this?' Penny thought angrily.
As soon as Penny finished, someone in the crowd scoffed and let out a mocking laugh.
"Why wouldn't she? She's just a broke country girl. She sees such an expensive painting, who could blame her for wanting to steal it?" the person sneered.
"Come on, like anyone else would have the guts to steal it besides her," someone scoffed.
"Thief! So gross!" another voice shouted.
Everyone started talking at once, piling on.
Hearing all these accusations, Gethin turned to Kaia, his face twisted with anger. "These pieces aren't just Morganburg University's. They're here thanks to all those powerful families and big shots who trusted us with their priceless collections.
"And now the most important painting is actually missing. If this gets out, it'll ruin our school's reputation—who knows what our sponsors will say?
"Kaia, this is way above your pay grade as a student. Just admit it and hand over the painting—maybe I can talk the school into going easy on you."
More and more people started crowding around, drawn by the drama, and the gossip just kept getting louder.
"Kaia's always acted like some slacker who can't be controlled. Honestly, I'm not surprised she'd stoop to stealing," someone scoffed.
"Totally! She skips class for days and when she finally shows up, she's trying to pull off something huge. One of Faye's paintings could let a country bumpkin like her coast through life without lifting a finger," another person snickered.
"Having someone like her at our school is honestly embarrassing. I really hope they kick her out soon. I don't want to share a class with someone who has such lousy character," someone else added.
While everyone was mocking Kaia, convinced she was the one who stole Faye's painting, Jake looked like he was about to jump out of his skin, itching to blurt out Kaia's real identity right then and there.
Penny was just as frantic, on the verge of losing it.
Both of them, hearts pounding with anxiety, turned to look at Kaia.
To their surprise, Kaia, standing right in the middle of the storm, looked completely unfazed. Her expression was so calm, not a single ripple of emotion—like none of this bothered her at all.
'Come on, this is Kaia we're talking about. Does she ever look rattled by a mess like this? There's no need for us to step in—just sit back and watch her handle it,' they both thought.
Feeling all those eyes on her from every direction, Kaia just curled her lips into a confident, at-ease smile.
"Why do you insist that the painting was missing?" she asked.
As soon as Kaia spoke, everyone exchanged glances, and the whole place went dead silent.
Everyone stared at Kaia, trying to catch any sign that she was lying or feeling guilty.
But she just stood there, calm as ever, not a trace of nerves or hesitation on her face.
Seeing Kaia so cool and collected made Beatrice suddenly feel unsettled.
"What do you mean by that?" Beatrice asked.
Kaia replied, laid-back and a little smug, "I had to step out for a bit, and since I wasn't sure everyone here could be trusted, I put the painting away before I left."
Catching the sarcasm in Kaia's words, Beatrice's expression turned downright sour. "Thanks for the heads-up... We almost had a heart attack thinking it was gone. If you've got it, then hurry up and show it."
Gethin, who had been grilling Kaia earlier, finally let out a sigh of relief.
"You nearly gave me a heart attack. Hurry up and bring it out," Gethin said, finally exhaling in relief.
