"No need to rush—just wait a sec. I hid the painting a bit far off, so let me go fetch it," Kaia said calmly, strolling off toward the opposite end of the hallway.
Beatrice watched Kaia's back as she left, lips twitching with a chilly, silent sneer.
'You actually think stalling like this is going to help you find the painting? Dream on. I've hidden it so well, no one but me could ever track it down.
'Just wait—when you come back empty-handed, everyone here is going to turn on you in disgust.' Beatrice scoffed to herself.
About ten minutes later, Kaia came back, holding a rolled-up painting in her hand.
Beatrice watched, unimpressed, and couldn't help but scoff.
'She's putting on such an act—there's no way that painting is real. That's why she's keeping it tightly rolled up, so no one can see what's actually inside,' Beatrice thought.
'Whatever. With the whole crowd staring, she can't just keep hiding it. The minute she finally opens it up in front of everyone, that'll be the end of her at Morganburg University,' Beatrice sneered to herself.
While Beatrice was busy plotting, Kaia had already told someone to hang up the painting.
Beatrice glanced over, ready to gloat—but as soon as she saw the painting, her eyes widened in disbelief. It was identical to the one that had gone missing.
'Wait, that can't be right!' she thought.
'I was the one who took that painting. There's no way Kaia could've tracked it down so fast. This has to be a fake,' Beatrice insisted inwardly.
She looked around, scanning everyone's faces for any sign that they'd noticed something was off.
But except for her, everyone else seemed totally at ease—nobody acted like anything was out of place.
'Seriously, do the professors not realize this painting is a fake? Or maybe it hasn't even crossed their minds yet. Fine, looks like I'll have to steer the conversation myself,' Beatrice thought, scheming.
"Professor Munoz, doesn't this painting seem kind of strange to you?" Beatrice said.
"Strange how?" Gethin asked.
"I can't quite explain it, but something about it just feels off. After all, this is supposed to be an original Faye, provided by the Moreno Group. Just to be sure, maybe the other professors should check it out and verify," Beatrice suggested with a concerned look.
Gethin considered her suggestion for a moment, then agreed it made sense. He immediately asked a student to fetch the other professors for an appraisal.
Several professors gathered around to examine the painting, and after taking a close look, every single one of them confirmed there were absolutely no issues with it—it was completely authentic.
Beatrice looked utterly rattled, her eyes full of disbelief.
'How... how could it be perfectly fine?' she thought, her mind in a whirl.
'I was the one who took that painting and hid it somewhere nobody else could possibly find. Did Kaia seriously manage to track down the exact one I stashed away?' Beatrice wondered, panic churning inside.
Desperate to find out the truth, Beatrice quietly slipped out of the crowd without anyone noticing, and rushed off toward the spot where she'd hidden the painting.
Kaia saw Beatrice sneak off and silently trailed after her.
After they'd left, Gethin accidentally brushed against the painting and looked down.
'Weird... why's there fresh ink on this?' he wondered, puzzled.
'Looks like it was just painted,' he thought, suspicion flickering in his mind.
'That doesn't make any sense,' Gethin frowned to himself.
Meanwhile, Beatrice darted into the garden, checking both ways to make sure no one was around, then quickly fished the painting out from the flower bed.
She stared at it for a while, but the more she looked, the more clueless she felt. She just couldn't make sense of it at all.
'What's going on? This painting looks exactly like the one Kaia showed everyone. For real?' Beatrice's brain felt like it was about to short-circuit.
'I took this painting off the wall myself—no way this is some copy or fake,' she kept telling herself.
'But even the professors said Kaia's painting was legit. So what the hell is happening?' Beatrice thought, completely stumped.
'So where did I mess up?' Beatrice wondered, her brain in overdrive.
Just as Beatrice was running mental circles, a voice rang out behind her, dripping with teasing amusement.
"So you really were the one who swiped the painting," Kaia said, her voice laced with cool mockery.
That familiar sound hit Beatrice like a bolt—she stiffened, then jerked her head around, almost like she was wound up too tight to move.
When she saw Kaia standing there, she nearly fell flat on her butt from the shock.
"Y-You... How are you here?" Beatrice stammered, her voice trembling.
Beatrice watched Kaia's back as she left, lips twitching with a chilly, silent sneer.
