Kaia's steps halted in an instant, her eyebrows furrowing in worry.
She recalled how Tobias was always so steady and unflappable whenever something came up.
She'd hardly ever seen him this angry before. 'Just what could have set him off?' Kaia thought to herself.
Tobias stared at the ruined painting, his face so stormy it looked like it could spill shadows.
"I've warned you over and over to make sure this painting was kept safe. How did it end up like this?" he demanded, his voice low and dangerous.
Devin kept his head down, sounding cautious.
"I... I did remind him. But the staff member in charge, Chen, got a high fever last night and was totally out of it, so he forgot to put the painting away. Just our luck, it poured all night, and that's why the painting ended up water-damaged," Devin said, a hint of helplessness in his voice.
Tobias took a deep breath, massaging his brow in frustration, momentarily at a loss for what to say.
Just then, Kaia came in from outside. She saw Tobias still looking furious, and couldn't help but ask, "What's going on? Why are you suddenly so mad?"
Tobias didn't want Kaia to stress over it, so he shrugged it off. "Nothing, really—just had to scold one of the staff who wasn't doing their job."
"That's so unlike you. You're never this upset over something trivial. Come on, tell me what's really going on." Kaia eyed Tobias skeptically, clearly not buying his explanation.
"Honestly, it's really nothing—just a little thing," Tobias replied, keeping it vague. "I've just been in a lousy mood the last couple days and can't seem to control my temper." He was set on keeping the real reason from Kaia.
Kaia already had a ton going on every day, and Tobias really didn't want her stressing over his troubles too.
Besides, he knew the research institute was working on an upgraded version of a new nanomaterial, and that was already wearing her out.
"In a bad mood?" Kaia squinted at him, suspicion clear in her eyes. "So what's got you acting like this?"
Tobias exhaled, flashed her a soft smile, and kept his eyes fixed on Kaia. In the next second, he wrapped his arms around her, pulling her close.
"It's all your fault for not coming to see me the past couple days. I've missed you so much I haven't been able to eat or sleep. Seriously, how could I be in a good mood when I'm like this?" he grumbled, sounding both clingy and a little aggrieved.
Kaia couldn't help but roll her eyes at him.
"Two days without seeing you, and you're still full of sass," she retorted.
Even so, she still wasn't entirely convinced by Tobias's explanation.
"Are you sure that's all it is? You're not hiding anything else from me, are you?" Kaia asked, eyeing him suspiciously.
"Of course it's true. Why would I lie to you?" Tobias said, knowing Kaia was far too clever and worried she might figure out something. But spotting the thermos lunch box in her hand, he immediately switched gears and changed the subject.
"Kaia, what are you carrying?" Tobias asked, his gaze dropping to her hand.
Kaia quickly pressed the thermos into his hands before he could say anything else.
"It's calming soup. I made it to help you cool off," she said.
Tobias's eyes lit up with a warm, gentle smile.
"We really are on the same wavelength, huh? Just when I'm all fired up, you show up with your calming soup. Kaia, you always know just how to take care of me," he said playfully.
Kaia arched an eyebrow, teasing, "You've got it wrong. This soup isn't for cooling off your temper—it's meant to help with a different kind of fire."
Tobias blinked, clueless for a second. 'What is she talking about now?' he wondered.
"A different kind of fire? What kind are you talking about?" he asked, still lost.
