Tobias's body went rigid, his eyes squeezing shut in reflex.
Kaia watched him, amused by how scared he was. She put away the medical tools and threw her head back, laughing out loud.
The sound of her laughter made Tobias slowly open his eyes.
Kaia was all smiles, the playful curve of her lips and every little movement impossibly enchanting.
Tobias's Adam's apple bobbed quietly, his gaze turning darker and more unreadable by the second.
He walked straight up to Kaia, who was still laughing joyfully, wrapped her up in his arms, and gave her nose a teasing squeeze as punishment.
"Kaia, you've gotten so much more mischievous lately. You actually used that silver needle just to mess with me!" Tobias said, half-teasing.
"Who would've thought you'd actually fall for it?" Kaia couldn't stop herself from laughing.
Every time Kaia remembered the look on his face—like he was about to face his greatest enemy, she couldn't help but burst out laughing all over again.
Tobias snorted playfully. "Go ahead and laugh, but let's see if I can make you laugh even harder in a minute."
"What do you mean?" Kaia felt a bad premonition creeping in and squirmed, trying to break free from his arms.
But before she could react, Tobias unleashed his tickle attack.
Kaia was notoriously ticklish, and now she was giggling uncontrollably, unable to catch her breath no matter how hard she tried.
"No, stop! Quit it, don't!" Kaia sputtered between bursts of laughter.
But hearing her say that only made Tobias double down. He ramped up his tickle attack, showing no mercy at all.
One thing led to another, and suddenly the two of them were messing around on the couch, laughter filling the room.
When Tobias finally stopped, Kaia took a moment to catch her breath. As she looked up, she realized she was sprawled on the couch with Tobias looming over her, his gaze fierce and hungry, like a wolf stalking its prey.
Kaia squirmed under his stare, her cheeks tinged with a shy blush that made her look even more enchanting.
"What do you think you're doing? Get off me! Quit fooling around like this in broad daylight!" Kaia protested, flustered.
"Kaia, we're engaged. I'm not being a creep—I'm just making the most of my fiancé privileges," Tobias teased, leaning in even closer.
Kaia put a hand on his chest and protested, "I have no idea where you get all this crazy logic. Come on, get off me!"
"Kaia, it's only been two days, but I already miss you. Let me hold you for a bit—don't be so heartless," Tobias said, his tone bordering on a whine.
Tobias fixed Kaia with a look, his deep eyes full of puppy-dog pleading, making it almost impossible for her to stay annoyed.
Kaia pressed her lips together, and seeing him like that, her resolve began to melt It was just too hard to push him away.
After all, it had been two whole days since they'd last seen each other. It was only natural that Tobias would want to get close to her.
Thinking that, Kaia didn't push him away. Her ears reddened and, trying to sound solemn despite her embarrassment, she said, "Fine, you can only stay like this for a while, then you have to get up. And you can't do anything else."
"Just this isn't enough," Tobias murmured, pressing his forehead against hers, his voice low and magnetic, filled with temptation.
"But I promise I'll just kiss you. Nothing else. Is that alright?" he reassured softly.
With things having come to this, Kaia couldn't possibly refuse. Blushing furiously, she slowly closed her eyes.
Kaia mumbled, flustered, "Then hurry up already."
As soon as the words left her lips, Tobias's familiar masculine presence seemed to fill the space around her, his scent and heat unmistakably close.
The space between them vanished, little by little, until their faces were just a breath apart.
