And just as Tobias was about to finally claim the lips he'd been dreaming of day and night, Kaia's phone rang.
The clear ringtone cut straight through the intimacy, snapping Kaia back to reality. Still blushing, she reached out and gave Tobias a little push.
"Move, I need to answer this," she said, not bothering to hide her fluster.
Tobias understood that, given Kaia's status, every call might matter. He braced himself on his arms and quickly rolled off of her, not messing around anymore.
Kaia pulled out her phone and saw it was a call from the institute. Her brows drew together in concern.
She answered right away, her voice losing its usual warmth, taking on a businesslike edge.
"What is it?" she asked.
After a brief conversation that lasted about a minute, Kaia hung up and turned to Tobias. "Something urgent came up at the institute. I need to head over there. Make sure you finish the soup, okay?"
Tobias stood up as well. "Do you want me to drive you?"
"No need. I drove myself," Kaia said, tossing a quick wave over her shoulder and briskly leaving the villa.
Tobias watched her go, his expression gradually turning serious.
He headed to the study and, spotting Devin waiting at the door, said coolly, "Come in."
Devin nodded slightly. "Yes, sir."
Once inside, Tobias sat down, his handsome features clouded with a lingering heaviness.
"So, did you ask around? Is there anyone who can restore the painting?" Tobias asked.
Devin shook his head. "All the art restorers said it's way too damaged. It's virtually impossible to restore."
Tobias pressed his fingers to his temples, letting out a slow breath as he tried to come up with a solution.
Devin was racking his brain too, and suddenly his brow furrowed. "Mr. Moreno, if my calculations are right, Keaton will be discharged in a few days. He practically worships that painting—if he comes home and doesn't see it, there's no way we'll be able to explain it."
"I know. With Grandpa's temper, if he comes home and that painting's missing, he'll definitely raise hell," Tobias said, his voice tight with worry. This was exactly what he'd been dreading, and the more he thought about it, the worse his headache got.
"So what do we do now? Should we just find a skilled artist to copy the painting and try to pass it off, at least until Grandpa gets over it?" Devin suggested.
Tobias gave him a side-eye. "You seriously think Faye's work can be faked that easily? Even if you manage to copy it, something will always be off. Grandpa's no fool—he'd spot it in a heartbeat."
He said this while his mind was racing, trying to figure out a solution.
Then something came to him, and he asked, "By the way, remember that Faye's painting that got auctioned off overseas? Any updates?"
Devin shook his head. "I asked around. Turns out an overseas tycoon got his hands on it at an auction. I managed to find his address and went to see him, but they told me someone else had already bought the painting for a huge price.
"As for who that new owner is, we haven't been able to track them down yet."
Tobias ran his fingers over his brows, about to say something, when his phone on the desk started ringing.
The caller ID flashed "Private Number." He hesitated for a few seconds, then finally answered.
"Hello?" he said.
"Tobias..."
He instantly recognized Grace's voice and hung up without skipping a beat.
But within seconds, Grace was calling again.
She blew up his phone, calling at least a dozen times in a row. Tobias finally lost his patience. His stare turned icy as he prepared to block her number for good.
His finger was just about to hit 'block' when a message from Grace suddenly popped up on the screen. [Tobias, the painting you want is with me.]
