Tobias's gaze froze on the spot, that dark, unreadable look lingering in his eyes.
In the silence, another message popped up from Grace. [If you want the painting, meet me at the Riverside Café at 5:30 PM today.]
When Tobias read the message, his hand clenched tighter around his phone, his expression turning even more grim.
Devin, standing nearby, noticed Tobias's changed expression and couldn't help but ask, "Mr. Moreno, what's wrong?"
"Just take a look," Tobias said, handing his phone to Devin. "Grace sent that."
Devin lowered his head and read through the two messages a few times, his frown deepening with each pass.
"This doesn't feel right. The painting was barely damaged, and Grace already knows we're looking for it. Clearly, she's been watching everything you do, Mr. Moreno. Meeting up with her—are we sure this isn't some kind of setup?"
"I've thought about that too," Tobias replied. "That's why I'm sending you instead—to see what Grace's really after." He'd never had any intention of meeting her himself.
"Wait, what?" Devin blurted out in shock.
Then, after a moment's hesitation, Devin glanced at Tobias. "But Grace obviously wants you there, not me. Is it even gonna work if I show up? What if she doesn't even let me see the painting?"
Tobias's brows knitted tighter. "Just go meet her. If it doesn't work, come straight back and tell me. I'll figure something else out."
Seeing that Tobias had made up his mind, Devin didn't argue any further.
"Got it, Mr. Moreno," Devin replied.
Just as they wrapped up their conversation, Tobias's phone buzzed again.
He glanced down. It was another message from Grace. [I'll only talk about the painting if you come yourself. If you send anyone else, I'm gone.]
Grace's tone was icy. She wasn't giving Tobias any wiggle room at all.
Tobias pressed a hand to his brow, the headache settling in. He let out a long breath, then looked at Devin. "You don't have to go. I'll handle this myself. Grace wants to see me, personally."
"Alright, boss," Devin replied, thinking to himself that Grace insisting on meeting Tobias was no surprise at all.
'Honestly, she created this whole scene just to meet him—like she'd ever let someone else take his place,' Devin mused.
Tobias sank into his chair, Kaia's face lingering in his mind. He shot Devin a warning look and said, "Not a word to Kaia about any of this, you hear me?"
"Crystal clear! My lips are sealed. I swear Mrs. Moreno won't hear a single thing from me," Devin promised, dramatically pressing a pretend lock over his mouth.
"Good," Tobias grunted, then bent his head and buried himself back in the paperwork.
It was still early; he figured he'd clear his desk first before heading out to see Grace.
At 5:30 PM, Tobias arrived at the Riverside Café, right on time.
*****
Grace sat by the window, and when she caught sight of Tobias, a trace of longing flashed in her eyes.
'No wonder he's the one I can't get out of my mind,' she thought, 'he's so talented and stunning—exactly the kind of man anyone would fall for.'
But what a pity, this man wasn't hers. He loved another woman with all his heart.
That thought brought a bitter edge to Grace's gaze, and she unconsciously curled her fists tighter, fighting the jealousy bubbling up inside her.
But now that Tobias was here, she couldn't let him notice any trace of her jealousy or negativity. She had to keep it together and hide her true feelings.
Grace took a series of deep breaths, and within just five seconds, managed to rein in her emotions. Her face gradually returned to calm, looking perfectly composed on the outside.
Once she'd steadied herself, she waved in Tobias's direction and called out sweetly, "Tobias, over here!"
Tobias turned toward the sound of her voice.
