Seeing where she was sitting, he walked right over, took the seat across from her, and cut straight to the chase: "So, name your price for the painting."
Tobias's cold voice cut right through Grace, like an icy blade to her heart.
Grace clenched her back teeth, her lips pressed tight, and she shot Tobias a look full of tangled emotion.
"Tobias, don't you think talking about money between us makes everything feel so cold?" she said softly. "I know you really need this right now. Just tell me you want it, and I'll give it to you, no questions asked."
As Grace poured her heart out, Tobias's face stayed perfectly calm, not a flicker of emotion showing.
"No money? So, what do you want in return?" Tobias replied, his voice cold and expressionless.
Grace fought to keep her jealousy under wraps, but it kept bubbling up, clouding her eyes with a bitter darkness she could barely hide.
"Tobias, did you really forget how close we used to be?" she asked softly, her tone filled with longing. "We could have been so much more... Why does it have to be so cold between us now?"
Tobias rubbed his brow, impatience flickering in his eyes.
"I've got other things to take care of. Stop wasting my time and just tell me what you want," he said, his voice cold and impatient.
His cold tone finally snapped something inside Grace, and she jumped up from her seat, her frustration boiling over.
"Is this all because of Kaia? Are you really so worried about her getting jealous that you have to shut me out like this?" she shot back, her voice shaking. "Tobias, you used to be so distant and unapproachable, practically a god—someone I could only worship from a distance.
"But now you've let someone like Kaia change you into a totally different person. Is she really worth destroying everything for?"
Tobias lifted his gaze, his icy eyes locking onto her without blinking.
He said coldly, "Are you done with the nonsense? Can we get to the point now?"
Seeing how stone-cold Tobias was, Grace knew there was no breaking through his armor. So she changed her approach.
"I'll give you the painting, and I'm not asking for a dime," she said, her voice low but determined. "I know you'd never leave Kaia for me, so my only condition is this—spend one night with me.
"After that, I'll vanish from your life for good. I won't get in your way, and I won't come between you and Kaia ever again."
As she spoke, she fished a hotel key card from her bag and placed it in front of Tobias, her fingers trembling just a little.
"Tomorrow night at nine, I'll be waiting for you at the Caesar Hotel. If you want the painting, all you have to do is show up." Her eyes never left his as she laid it all on the line.
Tobias curled his lips into a mocking smile as he looked at the hotel key card lying on the table, his eyes glinting with sarcasm.
"Grace, do you seriously think I'd sell myself over some painting?" he scoffed.
Grace bit down on her lip, her eyes welling up with tears she refused to let fall.
"I know you're not that type, really," she whispered, her voice trembling. "But I've been hung up on you for so long—I just want to settle things with the girl I used to be. All I'm asking is one night, just once.
"After that, I can finally put these feelings behind me. You get the painting, I get a little closure. It's fair for both of us—nobody loses."
Tobias's eyes grew colder, layers of icy disdain flickering in his gaze.
"Grace, I can't believe you'd sink this low just for me," he spat, his voice full of disgust. "Have you got no shame at all? This is just pathetic—using these cheap tricks to try and get your way."
