That one shameless accusation made her face drain of all color as if she'd been slapped in public.
She stared at Tobias, her whole body trembling uncontrollably, totally unable to get any words out.
It took her a full three seconds before she finally managed to speak.
"T... Tobias, is that really what you think of me?" she choked out, her voice shaking. "How could you say something so harsh? I only like you—what did I do wrong?"
"You liking me, but what does that have to do with me?" Tobias said coldly. "Just because you like me, am I supposed to reciprocate?" He stared at her like she was insane, his eyes full of mockery.
Grace clenched her fists for a moment, then released them, her voice softening as she tried to reason with Tobias.
"Tobias, I know you don't care about me, but what about Keaton?" she pleaded. "That painting is Keaton's absolute favorite. He's already been hospitalized because of his health.
"If he comes home and can't see that painting, he might get so worked up that he ends up back in the hospital. Do you really want to see an old man being put through that over and over again?"
Tobias cared about the painting, but that didn't mean he'd let Grace hold it over his head.
"If I really can't find a genuine work by Faye, at least I'll have tried my best. I'm sure Keaton will understand. But if he finds out I got the painting this way, he'd be even more disappointed. So just forget it. There's no way I'll agree to what you're asking."
Grace couldn't stand how indifferent Tobias was being. She glared at him, stubborn defiance shining in her eyes.
"Tobias, this deal won't cost you anything," she said urgently. "I hope you'll think it over again—don't be so quick to turn me down."
"Not reconsidering this. It's not up for discussion," Tobias said, his voice icy and final as he slowly rose from his seat.
"If it's money you want, I can give you what you need—as long as it's reasonable. But that condition you just mentioned? No way. That's never happening."
With that, he turned and strode out of the café, leaving Grace behind to stare at his cold, unyielding back.
Grace stared after him, her mind reeling from how cold and unyielding he was. She couldn't hold it in anymore—she grabbed the cup from the table and hurled it to the floor with a furious crash.
"Why? Why are you doing this to me?" Grace screamed, her voice raw with anguish.
'All I want is the guy I like. What did I do wrong? Why does everyone have to treat me like this?' she thought, her heart aching with injustice.
'No way! I'm not just going to let this go!' she told herself, her resolve hardening.

In the lab, Kaia stood in front of rows of test tubes, her gaze focused as she observed the experiment.
Out of nowhere, Kaia's phone started ringing from where it sat on the table.
The sudden ringtone pierced the silence of the lab, and Kaia furrowed her brow in mild irritation.
'How did I forget to turn on silent?' she thought, mentally kicking herself.
She set aside her data report and walked over to grab her phone.
Seeing the incoming call was from an unknown number, Kaia let it ring for a moment before finally answering.
"Hello," she said.
Grace's voice came through, cold as ice.
"Kaia, where are you right now?" Grace demanded.
Kaia instantly recognized the voice on the other end.
"Grace?" she asked.
Grace lifted her chin with a proud, almost defiant tilt. "That's right. It's me."
Kaia spun a pen idly between her fingers, her tone unhurried and teasing. "Well, did the sun rise in the west today or something? What made you suddenly think of calling me?"
"Obviously, I'm looking for you," Grace said, sounding bossy. "I'm at the Beyond Café waiting. Get over here. I have something to say."
Kaia's lips curled into a smirk, but there was no warmth in her eyes.
Kaia sneered, "And who exactly are you to me? You snap your fingers, and I'm supposed to come running? I don't have time to waste following your orders."
Grace scowled, her voice hard and commanding.
"I'm serious. So, are you coming over or not?"
Kaia scoffed, the sound dripping with sarcasm.
