"But if she doesn't appreciate that, I'm done giving her any more chances. My patience with her is officially out. If she tries to stir up trouble around me again, I'll show her exactly what happens when you mess with the wrong person!"
As she spoke, the coldness in Tobias's eyes slowly faded, replaced with a gentle warmth.
"You know, I really was worrying too much. You're unstoppable—dealing with something like this is nothing for you, just a flick of your finger. There's no need for me to intervene at all," he said, pride clear in his voice.
Kaia kept her face purposefully stern, turning away and fixing him with a serious look.
"Didn't you promise me that you'd always tell me everything—big or small? No secrets, no lies? But now, you're even keeping tiny things like this from me.
"If I can't trust you with the little stuff, how am I supposed to trust you on anything else?" she said, her tone steady but unmistakably firm.
"I'm sorry," Tobias said, completely earnest as he looked at Kaia. "I never meant to keep anything from you. I know you're super busy at the institute, and I just didn't want you to have to worry about me too. Kaia, I'm really sorry. Please, don't stay mad at me, okay?"
Kaia gave a little huff through her nose.
"Then swear to me—no secrets, no matter how big or small. If I ask, I want every detail, nothing left out. Can you promise me that?" she said, her voice steady and determined.
Tobias, worried Kaia might get upset, instantly nodded like his life depended on it.
"Of course, Kaia. I was in the wrong this time, and I promise I'll never keep anything from you again," he said, his voice full of sincerity.
"Alright," Kaia replied with a satisfied nod. "Since you actually apologized, I suppose I'll let you off the hook this time."
When Tobias heard Kaia say she forgave him, it felt like a huge weight had been lifted off his chest.
"Kaia, you're so good to me," he said gently, his voice full of gratitude.
Kaia lifted an eyebrow, giving Tobias a chill look out of the corner of her eye.
"Don't think you can get away with it every time. If you dare lie to me again, I won't go so easy on you," she warned, her tone calm but firm.
"Got it," Tobias answered with a smile, but then his smile faded as he remembered something.
"By the way, Kaia, what did Grace say when she dragged you to the café?" he asked, his tone shifting to serious.
"It was nothing," Kaia replied, her voice so calm it was almost flat.
"She just asked me to spike your food and then make sure you spend the night with her," she added casually, like it was nothing.
"Shameless!" Tobias burst out angrily.
It was one thing for Grace to say something so shameless to him, but to actually have the nerve to say that kind of stuff in front of Kaia—like she was trying to stain her innocence. That was way over the line.
"It's fine, all that's behind us now. No need to get all worked up over something so petty," Kaia casually waved off the topic.
Then, catching sight of the painting on the wall out of the corner of her eye, she pretended to be curious and asked in an offhand way, "So, what's up with that painting?"
Tobias followed her gaze and explained, "Someone came by earlier and dropped it off. They said it's an authentic piece by Ms. Unity.
"I checked—the style and all, it's definitely legit. But there's something odd; it doesn't look aged at all. I have a feeling it was painted pretty recently."
Hearing that, an almost imperceptible smile flickered in Kaia's eyes.
"Not bad, your eye for detail is pretty impressive," she teased lightly.
Tobias scratched his chin thoughtfully, then mused, "You know, with everything we've seen tonight, I'm beginning to suspect that Ms. Unity—despite all those rumors saying she's dead and gone—might actually be alive and well."
