Kaia's lips couldn't help but twitch.
'I'm still alive and kicking—so where are these rumors about me being dead coming from?' she thought.
Tobias didn't get an answer from Kaia, but he didn't care. He went on, "But if she's still around, then why hasn't she shown up in public even once? And why hasn't she posted anything new? Isn't that kind of suspicious?"
"What's so weird about that? Maybe she just found something else she wanted to focus on and stopped making painting her main thing," Kaia said.
She wasn't lying. Painting, playing piano, even tinkering with computers—those were just hobbies to keep herself entertained and sharp. Her real passion was always research.
Kaia gave that casual reply, not expecting it to catch Tobias's attention—but she suddenly found him glancing her way.
"Kaia, you say it like you actually know Ms. Unity—do you?" he asked, sounding genuinely curious.
Kaia kept her face totally straight. "Nope, it's just a guess. That's usually how it is, right?"
"Yeah, that makes sense," Tobias replied, not dwelling on it. "But there's still one thing that doesn't add up for me."
"What is it?" Kaia asked.
"I don't even know her. Why would she give me this painting out of the blue?" Tobias mused, genuinely puzzled.
Kaia gave him a leisurely glance and teased, "Maybe she just thinks you're hot."
Tobias arched an eyebrow at her. "Getting jealous, are you?"
"You really think I'm that petty?" Kaia shot him an exasperated look.
"Kaia, if you are jealous, just say it. No need to act all shy. I get it," Tobias said, still teasing her.
"Although maybe you're onto something. What if Ms. Unity actually has a crush on me? No way—I'm not about to trade my dignity for one painting. Guess I should give it back and tell her she's not my type," he laughed.
Kaia had met her share of people who love themselves, but Tobias honestly took self-obsession to a whole new level.
She couldn't help but roll her eyes, feeling like they might just get stuck that way.
"Aren't you looking for this painting right now? Someone literally gave it to you—why make a big deal out of sending it back? Just keep it. Besides, I think she simply wants to get on the Moreno family's good side.
"Maybe she hopes you'll meet up someday and it'll be less awkward. Seriously, it's nowhere near as dramatic as you're making it sound," Kaia said.
Tobias glanced at her, frowning slightly. "And what makes you so sure that's what she's thinking?"
Kaia kept her face unreadable and started riffing. "Okay, I might just be guessing here, but come on, Ms. Unity's a total icon in the art world, right? She's got integrity and attitude.
"Even if she was into you, no way she'd try to make a move knowing you've got a fiancée. That would be straight-up shameless. Can you really see a legendary artist sinking to that level?"
The more Tobias listened, the more it made sense to him. He nodded along.
"Yeah, hearing you break it down, I guess I was jumping to conclusions," he admitted.
Kaia just smirked. "Obviously."
"Alright, let's drop it," Tobias said, sliding in next to her and draping his arm over her shoulders.
"So, what should we have for dinner tonight?" he asked.
"Food? Oh, there's so much to choose from," Kaia said, starting to tick off options on her fingers. "Sweet and sour ribs, fish, shrimp..."
By the time Kaia had rattled off more than a dozen dishes, Tobias handed her a note he'd been scribbling on.
"Think that's enough? Want to add anything else?" he asked.
"That's plenty," Kaia said, glancing at the long list. 'Thank goodness the Moreno family's chef always makes small, fancy portions—otherwise, there's no way Tobias and I could finish all this,' she thought.
"Alright, you just sit tight. I'll go give the menu to the chef," Tobias said, getting up.
"Okay," Kaia replied.
Tobias got up and headed toward the kitchen.
Kaia watched his figure as he walked away, feeling her heart flutter with a subtle, sweet happiness.
