Penny's father, Donald Sharp, tugged at her arm. "Penny, don't make a fuss. Let's go home."
"Dad! You always taught me to own up to my mistakes and make them right. That's what makes a good person. But why can they be spared from it?" Penny argued.
Donald was stumped for words.
"So, it is okay to abandon your own family for the sake of so-called honor? Just because Kaia was raised in the countryside, she deserves to be cast aside?" As Penny spoke, her gaze swept over Lincoln and the others. Seeing that none of them intended to say anything, she shook her head and let out a mocking laugh.
"Kaia is smart enough to see that this family really is cold and heartless. It's better that she left." With that, Penny got into the car and told the driver, "Let's go find Kaia."
"Penny!" Donald called after her, hurrying to catch up.
The engagement party between the Bennett family and the Ross family had become a huge joke, and neither of the families was in the mood to keep it going.
Melvin stepped out with his cane to take control of the situation. "Sorry about this. Kaia has brought shame to us and made us a laughingstock. I won't say more. She's no longer part of the Bennett family. As for that video... actually, we already knew Andrea and Louis were together, and we fully supported them.
"Even if Louis hadn't come to break off the engagement, we and the Ross family had already agreed to arrange for Andrea and Louis to be engaged instead.
"Kaia is truly malicious. To get back at Andrea, she secretly followed them, filmed that video, and made it public. She didn't even care how this would affect Andrea's future.
"Such a malicious person has no place in the Bennett family, so from now on, please don't associate us with her anymore."
The guests spoke up one after another.
A man commented, "Mr. Bennett did the right thing. Someone who brings disgrace to the family really shouldn't be kept around. If it were us, we'd probably do the same."
Another said, "It's a pity, though. She was the top scorer in the city. And she even knew Collin Crawford."
"Being the top scorer is impressive, but with Kaia's personality, she won't get far in the real world. As for Collin Crawford... I used to wonder how Kaia got to know such an important figure. Now I get it. It turns out she has a sugar daddy," a woman asserted.
The guy next to her said, "That actually makes sense! No wonder Mr. Crawford showed up at Mr. Bennett's birthday party. It was probably Kaia's sugar daddy pulling strings."
The more the guests gossiped, the darker Ruth's face grew. No matter how much of a disgrace Kaia was, she was still the one Ruth had given birth to.
'What a humiliation!' Ruth thought bitterly. 'Kaia is hands down the biggest shame of my entire life.'
She also finally understood that the reason Kaia could dine with the research team was all thanks to the man keeping her.
'Whatever, I'm done thinking about it,' Ruth told herself. 'Kaia's not part of the Bennett family anymore. From now on, I'll just pretend Andrea was the only child I ever had.'
Meanwhile, on the road, Penny caught up with Kaia.
"Kaia, are you okay?" Penny asked, taking Kaia's hand with genuine concern.
Donald stood off to the side, lighting a cigarette and waiting.
Kaia could tell that Penny really cared about her, and it warmed her heart.
"Don't worry, I've long since gotten used to it," Kaia said.
