His deep eyes were filled with unwavering affection as he stared at her, as if he wanted to etch her into his very bones.
"Does liking someone have to mean you like just one particular thing about them? Can't it be everything? Can't it be pure and simple attraction?" Tobias asked.
His words left Kaia momentarily lost for words.
"Uh, it's getting late, and I'm tired." With that, she turned and headed for the door.
"I told you, I'm not giving up. So, Kaia, you'd better be prepared," Tobias said, his gaze fixed on her like a predator eyeing its prey.
Kaia glanced back at Tobias and said coolly, "Suit yourself."
Tobias grinned, his steps light as he caught up to her.
"So, does that mean you're giving me a chance?" he teased.
Kaia retorted, "I never said that."
"But you didn't say no," he shot back.
"Well, I'm saying—" Kaia started, but Tobias suddenly put his finger to her lips before she could finish.
"Shh, don't say it. Let me have a good dream tonight," he murmured.
There was a gritty texture to his touch, laced with heat that lingered on her skin.
Kaia raised her arm and gently pushed his hand away. "Don't touch me without my consent."
"Alright, I won't do that again," Tobias replied, his eyes lit up with delight.
Kaia stared at him, thinking his words didn't sound sincere at all.
But she couldn't be bothered to argue.
The night passed.
Early the next morning, Kaia started packing up her stuff.
Tobias showed up at the doorway, his sharp brows drawn together.
"Do you really have to leave now?" he asked.
"We agreed on one month, and that's exactly what I gave you. Plus, you said I owed you ten extra days for crashing at your place that one night. I paid those back too," Kaia said, still packing as she spoke.
"So, do you have anywhere to stay?" Tobias asked, concern clear in his voice.
Kaia replied, "I'll check into a hotel first and then look for a suitable place."
"Why not stay here until you find one?" Tobias suggested.
"Thanks for your kindness," Kaia said.
She had finished packing and was already heading downstairs with her luggage.
Just then, Keaton came rushing in, leaning on his cane. "Kaia, are you really leaving?"
"Sir, please don't try to keep me. You saved my life, and I honored our agreement by getting engaged to your grandson and staying here. Oh, and since you're here, please help me cancel the engagement with him." Kaia said.
Her words caught Tobias off guard. "I don't agree."
Kaia looked at him and said, "Why are you so unreasonable?"
"Because you were unreasonable first," Tobias replied sharply.
Looking at his righteous face, Kaia felt a little frustrated.
"No one can force me," she said, her tone unyielding.
"I'm not forcing you. I'm asking you," Tobias said. He could let Kaia leave for now, but there was no way he'd let her break off their engagement.
"Asking? Is this what you call asking? You sure have a funny way of doing that," Kaia retorted.
"Alright, alright!" Keaton cut in.
"Kaia, listen to me. The agreement was for one month. If you two didn't fall for each other, the engagement would be off. But now the problem is, Tobias likes you. That means the engagement still stands. How about this? Give him another month. If you still don't like him, then it's his problem, and I won't interfere," Keaton suggested.
"Sir, I've made up my mind. I'm leaving today, and the engagement is over," Kaia said seriously.
Keaton said with a sigh, "Alright, alright, I know how stubborn you are. Nothing can change your mind. If you want to end the engagement and leave today, I won't stop you."
