Instead of apologizing, Camille burst into tears first, clinging to Kieran's arm and pulling Miles behind her.
Acting like she was the victim here, not me.
This wasn't her first rodeo with the crocodile tears.
The year I got brought back, Camille played the sweet big sister, all concerned about my past.
Then turned around and leaked those naked photos Merrick had taken while beating the shit out of me.
Made me the laughingstock of Manhattan high society. Every socialite in the city froze me out.
When I confronted her, she literally kicked me into a closet.
Then ran out crying: "I already gave Victoria all my prettiest clothes, but she destroyed them and told me to get lost!"
Mom's eyes flashed with disgust. "Figures. Only bastard from a trashy family would act like this."
Dad kept quiet, but there was no way in hell he was sending Camille back to the Capets after that performance.
At the mention of the Capets, Kieran—who'd been reaching to help me up—froze and frowned.
Mom's eyes were blazing as she laid down the law: "Miles stays! He's a Fairfax now! I dare anyone to say otherwise!"
Getting exactly what she wanted, Camille shot me this smug look.
Then melted into Mom's arms, sobbing dramatically.
I wanted to laugh.
Because I was the one who'd grown up in that hellhole with the Capets. I was the one who'd been tortured.
"Kieran, Coco fell downstairs—"
I used every ounce of strength to whisper those words, but Miles's voice drowned me out completely:
"Daddy! Make the mean lady go away! Me and Mommy never lived in a house this nice, and she built an even bigger house for a stupid cat!"
Camille raised her hand like she was gonna smack him, but Kieran caught her wrist fast.
"He's only five years old and said something stupid. You correct him, but don't smack him!"
"Waahhh!"
Miles acted like she'd shot him and ran out bawling.
Mom chased after him frantically. "All for Victoria, or our family of five would be so hap—"
She didn't finish because Dad yanked her hard. Mom suddenly remembered I was still there.
Even the housekeepers were staring at me weird.
I suddenly started cracking up.
Right. In their hearts, the real family had never changed.
I was just some blood-related stranger crashing their happy family.
I pushed through the pain in my stomach and called a vet on my phone to come check on Coco.
Then I looked up at Kieran—the only one who bothered to stick around.
"Let's get divorced."
He looked stunned for a split second, then let out this nasty laugh:
"Jesus, you'll really say anything to compete with Camille for attention."
"Let me guess—your piece-of-shit dad taught you that trick."
My head started buzzing. I stared at him in complete shock.
Not long after I'd been brought back to the Fairfaxes, Merrick threatened to send those naked photos to my new school and teachers.
Terrified, I'd given him all my lunch money and ended up collapsing from hunger on the street.
Kieran had saved me, then stormed over to the Capets and broke Merrick's nose, screaming that he was a sick bastard.
He knew exactly how fucked up my past was, but he threw it in my face anyway.
The pain in my stomach got vicious.
Kieran finally noticed I looked like death and helped me onto the bed.
But when he saw there was no blood on the floor, he smirked.
"Maybe learn something good from Camille for once."
Like he'd decided I was faking it all to get his sympathy.
His special ringtone went off—only for his percious Camille.
Just like the past seven years, she called him away with effortless ease.
But I didn't care anymore.
My body felt like it had hit its limit. Everything went black and I passed out cold on the bed.
When I woke up, something warm and wet was touching my face.
Kieran was dabbing at me with a washcloth.
"Why the hell didn't you tell me you were sick? You're pregnant—how can you be so careless?"
I stared at his worried face. Like he actually gave a damn about me.
